I had heard some rumors, but this email came from thier mailing list this morning:

CLAYTON PET EMPORIUM IS FOR SALE!
IF INTERESTED CALL JAN FOR THE DETAILS MONDAY-FRIDAY 314-725-7757.

I was hoping Jan could survive the Highway 40 shutdown, but I think the downturn of the economy might have been too much. Either way, she and her store will be missed if she were to sell it.

Serving all the lawyers and such living in the Clayton area you think 40 wouldn't have hurt as bad.

IS she just "getting out" or is the business in tough times?

Don't they have a stake in Walt Smith as well? Maybe the LR business has fallen off.

definitely a great store, but definitely small and expensive as well

small business is a tough world

I heard rumors a while back that they were thinking about selling. I am sorry to see that it's true:(

If she's getting out due to the lack of business, I think she priced herself out of business. I think if her prices where lower she may have attracted more customers, made more sales, and increased profits.

If she's just getting out to get out, I wouldn't blame her. She's been there a long time.

Either way it will be missed.

That's a shame. It has always been the best kept store in town, glass is clean, doesn't smell, great looking corals. I never had a problem with their coral or livestock prices, but I never looked at drygoods there. I think Capo should take all his oil money and buy it.

No, no, you don't seem to understand... He invented oil. You see, his wisdom far exceeds his age, because back in the day he had the bright idea to kill all the dinosaurs. Then he waited around for a while, and bam, fossil fuel was invented. Sort of cornered the market before the market was ever introduced... He's crafty like that.

And old.

Wow, big loss for Saint Louis:( Jan was one of a kind and she ran the BEST store in Saint Louis Saltwater for years. She will definitely be missed. If someone does buy the store they have some very big shoes to fill!!

Good luck to Jan and thanks for the many years of providing excellent customer service and livestock to Saint Louis:beer:

From what she said a few days ago she will still be running the maintenance side and keeping the name. She is just selling the store front. They are still business partners with WS, nothing changing there and Gary went back to doing electrical work from what I was told.

is there a going out of business sale or anything?

I spoke w/ her on the phone the day before she sent the email out. She told me she wanted 125 for the store and an additional 40 for the stock....

She also stated the store was going to be closing by the end of the month....

:(

Wish she wasnt going.....

Nick

I've been there 3 times and yes, they are a little overpriced but the service I got is what turned me away from them!?!?

wish I had 125.... I'd love to own a store like that...

It sounds like it would be cool to own a saltwater store...But owning a business in general is more work than fun. I'm always buried in paperwork and stressed because of this or that.....Sometimes I would rather be just a number.
