Clicks in tank mystery solved-pic of culprit

Well, I knew which rock this guy was in, so I finally took it out today and dipped it in fresh water. Instantly copepods, amphipods and this guy shot out. I'll most likely leave it in my refugium. What do you guys think? It's only 1/2" long, I think it'd be perfect for a Catalina Goby..:lol:

Yeah..this guy's been in my tank for at least 1.5 years already. Must be living well, survived through alot, tough little guy.

While we are thinkng about pistol shrimp.....

I was thinking about getting a randalls pistol shrimp and a white ray goby.

Acouple of questions...

Will any of the fish in my tank (look belo in "Current Tanks") eat the shrimp of goby, b/c they ould be really small.

It would be in a 125g tank, and I would like to be able to see them, is there any way to encourage them to build thier burrow up in the front of the tank?

And XeniaMania, why are you putting him in your fuge? What could he hurt? You want me to take him off your hands? LOL

Oh man...I already dumped him in my fuge! Well, pistol shrimps can send shockwaves through the tank. I mean...look at how tiny it is, and I can hear it from across the room. I want to keep tiny fish, like baby tang and just don't want to risk it.

Also, sorry, I don't know much about pairing gobies and shrimp, but doubt you'd wanna pay next day air for this guy. If you want I can probrably find him in my chaeto somewhere in the fuge..

i have 2 clowns and a yellow watchman goby. had a bi color blenny but he went carpet surfing and was successful the second time.

i had no problems with any of the fish and the pistol. when they pair the fish is very careful when the shrimp comes out. if i move at all he wiggles his tail and the shrimp dissapears.

get a goby for him its a cool thing, but if you have corals on your sandbed, like brains, be warned they might move in underneath like mine did. killed a closed brain while i was on vacation so now they live under the 3/4 skeleton

Oh....now I see the drawbacks. I am worried about the fish eating the shrimp, not the shrimp harming the fish.

Well..I don't know how big they need to be, but according to an article I've read, they can send shockwaves 1.8 meters away killing fish. Again, I can hear this little guy across my living room and he's only 1/2". It's for the safety of my future baby tang.

i believe your pistol will be fine.the shock waves are mainly for defense anyways. also, it's all a matter of catching them for sand planted corals. if you can provide an area with rock rubble and ALOT of sand, they should be fine.

Maybe I should catch them all, then try breeding them, since apparently they seem to be breeding in my tank. Then sell them as Catalina Goby shrimps...

How cool do you keep your tank? Aren't Catalina Gobies the ones that can't live over about 73 degrees?

I don't know about that, I've never kept any Catalina Gobies, but my tank hovers around 78.5-80

I have a bullseye pistol shrimp in my tank that looks an awful lot like the one in your picture and he has never harmed a thing in my tank. I can hear him clamping from my bedroom, and I've seen him do it, too, and he is in no way trying to kill anything. My coral beauty was practically rubbing against him when he did it to her and she just kept right on grazing. I've read they're detritus eaters and, at least with mine, reef safe. He's all bark and no bite. Keep 'em!

the catalina gobies will survive for awhile over 75 degrees, but not for long.

They like waters around 68-75 degrees

Thank you for your feedback Sara, the shrimp is already in my fuge anyways, plenty of food for it there. It's so tiny though, 1/2"..:lol:

I've seen a pistol shrimp that looks like that before. I have two tanks and each one has a goby/pistol pair. My main tank has a 3" Tiger Pistol and his clicks are pretty loud but the fish don't seem to care at all. I have firefish that seem to care less about the shrimp, and they seem like the most likely canidate to jump when a pistol shrimp snaps. A pistol shrimp is great to have, they are very entertaining to watch. Their snapping is only for defense (that I can tell) and it doesn't seem to ever hurt anything. It sure scares the hell out of my Emerald Crab if he comes anywhere close though, lol.

Cool, my wife tells me that she can hear clicks from my aquarium at night. Who knows, maybe I got an extra tenent.
