Clown goby - GUILTY as charged

Well on my other thread about coraline outpacing my SPS, misled mentioned the clown goby as a possible culprit. Now I had never seen the clown goby nip at any polyps so that thought never crossed my mind.

Anyway, after the meeting last night I put the frags I came home with (4 from cloakerpoaked, 1 from TJ and 1 (the luck was not with me - as I really wanted a monticap) from the raffle in my tank with the lights already out.

This afternoon, with the lights on, I was cleaning the front glass to get a better look at my new additions (all of which seem to be doing great BTW), and I notice my Clown Goby admiring the green slimer frag from cloakerpoaked. Yep, next thing you know, the damn clown goby is snacking on it. I chase him away, continue cleaning and see the clown spying the acro I won in the raffle. CHOMP. He digs in on that one as well.

OK, enough is enough - I grab my net and say if you want to play that way, the game is on. So for 45 minutes i try and catch the #$%^&. Do you realize how difficult it is to catch such a small fish in a tank full of rock, corals and lots of hiding places.

So I resort to an old Python water changer tube - and see if I can create some suction and coax him into the tube. gave up after 10 minutes on that idea.

Finally as i sit down to watch the Pitt game, I have a brainstorm. I put my net in the tank, and put the acro and green slimer frags / plus inside the net - all sitting nicely on a rock. Then I wait. Stealing glances from the Pitt game to the tank - I see the clown goby spying the new additions. he explores from all angles but is careful not to enter the lair. he would come up from one side, then retreat. Well this went on for about 30 minutes when the temptation became too much for him. he swims in and lands on the green slimer plug. I slowly get out of my chair, and carefully reach in and grab the handle of the net and yank it up.

Woo hoo - trapped the sucker. I take the frags out of the net and put them back in the tank - leaving the poor helpless clown goby as my captive. Since I have no where else to put him (my wife kindly suggests out in the yard - and to think he was her favorite fish too), I check and see Wet Pets is open til 5. i look at my watch and its 4:35 so I go out on the snow covered roads and deliver the coral munching goby to Wet Pets so he can feast on someone else's tank.

hopefully now my SPS will do better than before. there is no doubt now that the clown goby was slowly killing them

good call jesse

Glad you figured that one out. I had never heard of that either until Ray told me it wasn't a good idea when I mentioned I was going to put a green, yellow and black clown goby in my tank.

Glad you were able to catch him. That doesn't seem like an easy thing to do.

I wish quite a few years back someone would have told me how nasty some Psuedocromis can be. I'll never forget tearing down a reef to get him out.

glad you fixed the problem and i got a few good laughs from reading your post.
i have an angel fish that eats only zoas and will not touch any other type of coral. i think about taking him out but ripping apart my tank with close to 200lbs of lr seems like way to much work.

I think most gobies like to snack on sps polyps. you didn't what kind of clown goby you had but I found out (the hard way) that green clown gobies release a slime when they're stressed that will kill corals as well.

Oh and what type of cap were you looking for? A lot of club members have more pieces of monti than they know what to do with. I'm sure even Sam would give you a piece of something for a very small price or even free.

Man...I have some red and orange monti cap....and some purple. Its yours.... I donated the red and orange and highlighter last night.

I think the problem is that corals in people tanks are too SMALL. They naturally host Acropora and if the corals are large when they clear a spot it should be fine but on a frag it will most likely kill it.

Frag stands of corals and clown gobies just don't work.

Thanks all. had the clown goby for at least a few years in my old 37g. never had SPS in there so it never was an issue. When I took down the 37g and made my 72G SW is when i started adding some SPS. But hadn't really seen him munch on any SPS til today. of course, he was probably doing so when I was at work.

Buck - thanks, I appreciate that. I will touch base with you about picking up some monti cap.

I have a coral beauty angel that is reef safe, but every once in a while he nips at my SPS as well. He really doesn't do it often at all, or go to town or anything, so I'm not worried about it, but you just need to realize, especially in a mixed reef, that you should choose your stock list carefully. Clowns, tangs and chromis are usually safe bets :) I've wondered if maybe it has something to do with how often the fish are fed too. I feed maybe 3x a week to keep my nitrates down and because my fish load is so low in my system.

Yeah they are definitely NOT reef safe IMO... I had to yank a Green Clown Goby out of my little cube after he was shutting down all my milleporas. Luckily I was moving and tearing the tank down so catching him wasn't difficult.

However, I heard they can be caught easily by using some larger diameter clear tubing... start a siphon, and suck the little devil out from the SPS he's perching on.

Glad you were able to get him out.

I use a fish trap - caught two domino damsels the other day that were originally bought to cycle my son's tank - which he never set up. I have a rock beauty angel that nips SPS occasionally - but he is mellow for a angel. Then again - I Should pay more attention - my SPS have not grown much.
