Clown Identification

I recently purchased this great clown

and would love to find a mate for her. She was sold as a black saddleback (she is easy 5 1/2 inches long) and I've been searching for a small one to be placed into the tank with her.
The black saddlebacks that I'm seeing in stores and online do not really look like her. Any help is appreciated. :D

Well, I guess that I will have to be satisfied with her until I can find a mate. I went back to the LFS yesterday to see if he was able to find another one but he said no. I guess it's time to put feelers out.

Thanks for the verification!!

Your fish is a saddleback clown (A. polymnus). The mid-bar is overly abreviated. It will be very difficult for you to find a mate with the exact same color and markings. It is not very common to see polymnus that are undermarked.

get a hold of phishy business his been getting in black saddleback clowns lately.

P.S. they arent up on his site so youll have to email him about them.

when i was at his store on friday they had about 3 in for $25 and a pair but i dont remember the price on them.

good luck hopefully he has a few left

I know. That's why I was surprised to open my package and have 2 Black Saddleback clowns inside. I'll try to get a pic and post it. I know the link is labeled as Black Percula, that's why I suggested to call and confirm what he would in fact be shipping.

The fish in this link are not black polymnus, they are black and white ocellaris.

As phil said you will have a difficult time finding one that matches.

I wouldn't bother ordering A. polymnus online, they are readily available at LFS in most places. Where do you live? I'm sure someone here can help source one locally for you.

edit: Oh yeah. As BK said, they are often mislabeled as Black ocellaris so take a loot around and don't worry about what they are labeled. Most stores have a book that you can use to verify ID and sometimes they'll give you a cheaper price on confirmed polymnus rather than black ocellaris.

Around NorCal black A. ocellaris will set you back around $43 while small black ocellaris are under $25.

I live in New Orleans and have tried the LFS there and also one in Lake Charels (where I purchased the one that I have). I'm being told that they have not been on the stock list again after this one came in.

Bencozzy,

Thanks for the info on phishy business, I am contacting them now to get what they have in stock. I'm so excited!

Too bad you didn't live closer as I'd give you mine when I switch over tanks in a few weeks. Mine doesn't have the broken/partial second and third bar though. They are complete. Only it's nose has a little orange on it and the rest is of the body is black.

Well, I just received my shipment from fishy business. I ordered 2 and both are in great condition. I'll post pictures when they are out of QT.

The two new clowns are now in the main tank. They are getting along great! I was concerned at first that one would not be accepted but as you can see, they all get along great. Another good thing happened. As soon as the 2 were added the large clown decided to move into the carpet :)
