Clown intelligence & interaction with owner

lol, pretty sure!

Whats really interesting, is my female, is eating maybe a flake or two a day now, and shes getting huge! All the sudden too their very territorial about their cave, they used to let the baby mollies in, but now their not allowed near it!

Crazy fish.

like her belly is getting really big...constantly looks like shes just ate a large meal...

I've never heard the term gravid before? Yes, I'm new at this. :)

Hmm, so maybe shes making eggs? A lot of the links in there said "heavy" but a few said "Pregnant"...

If she is that'd be cool, I've been hoping they would lay eggs...

If that is what your thinking...any other ways to tell? Or do I just have to wait until they lay (or dont) ?

could be. the aggression, not leaving their hosting spot and bulging belly are all good signs.

Often they will lay their eggs an hour or so before lights out. It's great fun to watch. Document how many days it takes the eggs to hatch and how many days after that they lay their next clutch. This way if you ever decide to raise the babies you'll be one step ahead of the game.

They typically lay their eggs on a smooth surface like a rock or cave side, or even the tank if it's painted or part of the overflow etc. You should see them starting to clean the spot they will be laying on. They'll take turns or work together cleaning off an area of rock or the like by pecking at it.

They've cleaned the same rock for several months now, its about 3" away from their cave...so I'm assuming thats the rock they'll use...but like I say, they've used it for several months with no previous eggs.

I do plan on trying to raise the fry when they do begin laying...I'm going to wait until the 3rd hatching or so before I make an attempt though...like you said, get used to how long it takes the eggs to hatch, etc..plus I have no way of knowing when they will start to have rotifers ready.

Thats so exciting to hear they could, maybe, be close though. I've been raising baby mollies in this tank for the last month (I don't know how they've survived, I never fed them anything and I didnt seperate them from their parents) and I used to raise guppies and such. But I'm really looking forward to raising saltwater fish (Yeah the mollies are in salt water, but they just arent as cool).

As long as we've completely hijacked the thread.

Get a copy of "Clownfishes" Joyce Wilkerson and you can get rotifers and such at www.reed-mariculture.com

Start another thread if you have anymore quesitons. I'll look for it.

Awesome thanks for the link...I've heard about that book, but now I think I'll actually go out an buy it :)

About 10 years ago I trained a female blue gill that was in a 1-acre pond to jump out of the water and take worms out of my hand. One thing that helped with this is because she was guarding her nest and stayed in the same area. I hope no one ever ate that fish :( Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m sure my clowns could do the same thing, but i donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want water everywhere.
