clown mantis a spearer

I just recently bought a clown mantis. But he hasn't hit anything yet. Looking more closely at his appendages, i don't see the hammers. So I'm assuming that either they fell off or he is a spearer. His claws look like spears.

But I didn't think that there was a such thing as a clown mantis that is a spearer. Am i wrong?

Clown mantis is a nicknake, like peacock mantis (Though that one makes sense, once you look at an O. scyllarus' tail section).

As above, do you have pictures,or a link to where you bought it?

Odontodactylus have two to four short spines on the inside of the dactyl. They are the only smasher that does.

I take it that the spikes are there for gripping the prey while smashing it?

here are blurry pics of him from my camera phone. Sorry, i don't have a normal camera.

i guess i meant to say that he's a peacock. So is it possible for him to spearer?

Your mantis is an O. scyllarus, a 'peacock'. The flagship Smasher, as it were. They keep their smashing dactyls 'cocked' in most of the time, so don't panic , thinking that he has lost them. My larger one doesn't really even bother smashing at small crabs: He (sometimes) hits them once and then just starts tearing them apart. They have 4 smaller arms with pinchers for this.

but i'm telling ya, he's got spears. he hasn't touched my hermits, and he went after a goldfish that i dropped in there. he didn't catch it, but he went after it.

and when i stick my chopstick in there, he hugs it instead of snapping at it.

If his dactyls have fallen off in a molt, he will grow them back. Feed him a lot (Remove excess food, obviously...), he'll need fuel to regrow his Howitzers.

If he has dactyls then they probably arent lying in a molt somewere. the fact that it went after a goldfish rather than a hermit is a good indicator, is it living in a burrow in the sand? did you bother tio get it sand to burrow in? Just look at the claws, maybe even draw us a picture of them, and thats how you tell.

he's not burrowing. he's dug a tunnel under a rock. and now he's actually coming out a little now to look at me. Looking at him closer, it seems as he has one hammer on one hand, and a spear on the other. so i'm assuming maybe that he lost on appendage. maybe he doesn't want to hit things with just one hammer. OR MAYBE, HE'S A NEW COOL XMEN TYPE BREED THAT HAS ONE SPEAR AND ONE HAMMER......

here is another blurry pic. sorry, my camera phone sucks. but i circled the part that looks like a spear.

For the first time since I've had Boris (11 months), I witnessed Boris disengage his dactyl out from his arm for a cleaning. I have known they had the capability because I recovered an entire raptorial appendage during one of his first molts and disected it to see all the intricacies. When disengaged the "club" turns into a very sharp and barbed spear like that of a P. ciliata or other spearer, its not as fully developed for spearing and retracting fish..BUT, I think it gives him the capability of attacking and "opening" both hard crustacean flesh (club) and soft fish flesh (spear), probably something that has helped diversify and adapt to changes in their environment... I am sure Dr Roy has examined the possibilities...

(When i first got Boris, I fed him a goldfish, however he wouldn't bash it, and at first I was a little disappointed. Instead he would grab the fish by the tail and HOLD him under himself in his burrow for at least 20-25 minutes... somehow he was able to kill them this way or at least subdue them enough to stop any struggle, ANYWAYS, I swear that i saw him disengage something (I am assuming his dactyl) and use this "blade" to cut the underside of the fish from anus to gill. He shucked out the surgically eaten carcass of the fish leaving only the head, backbone and tail... I was impressed to say the least....

that sounds awsome! i have never heard about them using it as a blade. then again theve had alot of time to evolve!

call me stupid, but i still don't get it. "disengage his dactyl out from his arm for a cleaning?" what do u mean by this? he loses his hammer and it turns into a spear?
