Clown not hosting in anemone anymore?

So I have a single maroon clown which used to have a mate which died for some odd reason a few days after introduction to my tank. I bought the two with a purple tip anemone, This clown used to live inside the anemone and would not move, recently a few months later, the clown doesnt really hang out inside the anemone anymore. he kinda wanders in the rock work or will swim underneath and sometimes touch the anemone... what could be going on? also I want to try to add another to possibly remate this clown, what would be the best method? larger or smaller clown?

thanks!

He may be getting stung - if the purple tip anemone is a Caribbean variety. It is difficult to tell without photos.

The natural host for a maroon clown is E. quadricolor - or bubble-tip anemone (BTA)

As far as adding another clown goes, it all depends on the age and size of your current clown. Again, photos would help.

sry it took so long here is a pic

The anemone doesn't look like a lta, looks more like a condy. The clown you have now looks small, you could add a smaller one.

my clowns (true percs) would rather host frogspawn than my RBTA, makes me sad, but the frogspawn doesnt mind. Also they did host the frogspawn before I even put in the RBTA, is there a trick to get them to host it instead?

I have a LTA and last week my clown did not host in it for 3 days. My clown is back to beating the thing up again. Clowns are weird.. I am sure, give it a week he/she will be back.

its been about 2 or 3 weeks since he has been hosting, he used to not leave the thing, only to eat.
Im actually going to get rid of the anemone, and get a bubble tip, this one has grown so much in the last few months that he is starting to sting my corals... any recommendations on what I should replace him with? it's in a 12gallon

A 12 gallon tank? Nothing. No hosting anemone should be put in something that size.
