Clown tang primer?

The problem with clown tangs is they are unsuitable for almost all aquariums. It would be like starting a primer for vlamingii tangs. I guess at least it would be really short...

Do you have a 1000 gallon aquarium?

No?

Don't get one.

Haha.

They are unsuitable for almost all aquaria that are nonpublic. No value in having a primer for that.

If I didnt already have a home lined up for him when he gets to big/aggessive I would not have gotten one. that and Im one of those people that usually has to try things for myself.

I really like him, but he is 1/2 the size of the other tangs and still beats them up pretty good.

When the time comes for him to go I will not be getting another, simply to big a PINA to get aclimated(this is the third one, the other two never made it past 2 weeks) and once they are they turn pretty evil.

Beautiful fish, but trust me...not worth it.

You make my case for me. They often perish, they are evil. But if you absolutely must try everything for yourself, may I recommend a Sohal tang?

Just curious...then why is there a moorish idol primer when moorish idols are unsuitable for almost all aquariums? Most of the time moorish idols die in a home aquarium...

There was a guy on here that had a Clown tang in a 240 for a few years that was probably close to a foot, and looked very healthy. But most of the time they do die, so I am not saying its a good idea to try one, just saying that there can be exceptions.

That particular thread did not start as a "Primer", but was renamed as such due to the popularity of the other "Primer" threads, as well as the large number of responses.

Also, moorish idols don't need nearly the space that clown tangs do... they really do need public aquarium sized tanks [for a full life span]

Even the sohal can be a challenge. Mine is one of the smallest in my 175, but he is by far the meanest.

If I remember correctly the clown tang you are asking about like to range over sandy areas and not rocky ones like most other tangs.

Funny everyone should say that because I have both in my tank doing very well. Moorish Idol isabout 2 yrs old and the clown tang I have had for 6 months or so and both are doing very well.
I just hope the Clown tang don't become too aggressive over time.

clown tangs look so temptingly good though...

it's the richness of their colour and the defined-ness of their pattern..plus the non-stop swimming makes it a very cool fish.

They are awesome looking fish, but it's their price, usually $39.99 that winds them up in many people's tanks, unfortunately...

Can you provide a link to this fish or a photo?

It's unfortunate that a lot of hobbyists still get the chance to keep one. This fish should be part of "List of fishes that requires 1,000gallon tank... or more" thread. :D
