Clownfish jumped out of my tank....

after 20 years off keeping fish they only jump when they want out of a terribad situation. That jump may have been his 10000 try you may never know. sorry for your loss almost 18 years off keeping fish happy have not run it to this kind of mistake again. stock and aquascape right and fish don't leap

An open top invites jumping

FWIW - ANY fish can jump for ANY reason. Usually it's because they are startled by something - and it does not need to be anything inside the tank - a person walking past can catch them off guard. I'm a real big fan of 1/4" mesh tops - the DIY window screen frame type if your tank has a rim. If it is rimless, there is a company that makes all acrylic ones that look real sharp and would be pretty much invisible, but the name escapes me right now.

I had the same thing happen to my new clownfish. I bought him after my original clownfish and they were doing their pairing up/dance. Guess it didnt work. Whats the best way to introduce a new clown to a tank with a clown already?

Sorry for your loss. My tanks are covered, but every time I get new clowns they end up jumping over the divide into my overflow and I have to pull them out. After once or twice they usually settle in.

IMO ... Wrong on both counts

This!

I know that all fish have the potential to jump. The only fish I've had do it was a coris wrasse and I think he did it out of sheer recreation. Wrasse love jumping apparently. I threw his remains into the birds of paradise plant behind my fence that housed a mongoose and drove down to north shore to catch his brother on the same day. Free fish in Hawaii everyone!

I had my covered with a screen and from. Lifted up slightly to let power cords through.

My favorite little fish, McCosker Wrasse managed to get by.... Lesson learned, no gaps.
