clownfish pairing up?

i have had my clownfish for about a year and they kinda hang out when the lights are on, but when they turn off and go to sleep they sleep on different sides of the tank? why is this happening?

Sounds like neither of them has become the dominant one yet, though that seems rather odd for as long as they've been in there. Once one becomes dominant and turns female the other one won't leave its side.

one is an onyx which is about 2 1/2 inches which i got first and is a little bigger than a semi picasso which is about 2 inches

The female truly hasn't accepted a male until they share a sleeping location. For some reason she won't accept the picasso. One theory is that a pure form like the onyx doesn't want to procreate with a genetically inferior fish like a picasso. When I've had multiple clowns in the same tank two would often pick on the misbarred one. Take one away and the picking stops, but they still don't mate-up.

Mine does the same as well. The video provided clearly shows who's the boss. As a result, the female swims wherever she wishes while the male stays in the back tank. However, I believe the male is very cautious which explains why he's in the back & behind the torch most of the time.

I have pairs regularly breeding that don't "sleep" in the same location, way too many variables to make predictions on the specific situation. Tank size, anemone or not, flow, maturity, actual species("onyx" and "picasso" are frequently marked incorrectly), etc., just to start the list of questions.

fwiw: "color" pattern is a lesser qualifier for a mate, than courting behavior. Don't forget the SI/PNG A. perculas are naturally occuring, along with quite a few wild hybrids, and they do not look like the species holotypes at all.

She hasnt fully turned into a female probably/should be in the process... Once she fully turns she will accept him and they should share the same nem day or night... He won't leave her sight... I don't think color patterns plays a role in this as I have a pair of SI onyx and Picasso...Good luck
