clownfish swimming patterns

I recently got a pair of clowns.. they swim out in the open at all times.. do they ever ttry and go in and out of rocks?

Yes. They will pick a spot (or "host")... Could be in some rocks, or even in the corner of the tank. Once they settle in and select their spot, They will seldom leave that area of the tank and you'll wish they were swimming out in the open!

In the wild, clowns rarely stray more than one metre from their anenome, (or substitute).
(One of the few adjustments they made to finding Nemo which for the most part was quite accurate)
That's why they do so well in aquariums, in contrast to tangs who can swim great distances.
Mine pair have not ventured more than a foot in 24 months now, even if food is on the other side of the DT, they will wait till it comes closer.

Be glad yours are out swimming. My pair just stay behind the rocks in the lower back corner. Yawn! Granted it's only been a little over a week but I'll give them a few more weeks and if they don't change I'm getting something else. Space is too precious to devote to boring fishes.

They have a "nesting" type pattern, residing in a host normally or a spot if a host is not available.

Best way to see them where you want is to provide something like that for them, and it does not have to be an anemone, frogspawn or hammer or similar will do usually.

Mine also stays on the top backside of the tank 90% of the times. How to bring them in front?

The female stays on the right side of tank near powerhead.. The smaller assuming male deviates once in a while and swims all around ..

Seems absolutely clownish to me.....refer to Davocean above.....this is exactly what you need to do.....right now....the powerhead is the host....try and change that....

Mine host above and behind my Elegance, luckily the wordage l Elegance doesn't mind. From time to time they stray to the other side and sometimes away from each other but generally they are together in the same spot just chilling
