No matter where you moved it, you still wouldn't be allowed to talk about whatever you wanted. The majority of FMAS members think you should never badmouth a lfs, no matter what the reason. Anytime anyone does, 50 people jump down their throat with the "support our lfs no matter how bad they are" line.

I found that out the hard way a few weeks ago.

I dont see how there can be a discussion about freedom of speech when we aren't allowed to say that a stores tanks are covered in aiptasia, flatworms, etc. because they might not sponsor the next frag swap if we speak the truth.

that is a good point.

yeah, but palm beach has a clubm why not make it a moving meeting? One time in kendall the next in plantation the next in boynton beach. How many of you in droward would be able to make it down to kendall at 7 or 730 on a week night?

FMAS held its meetings in the Museum of Science, in Miami, for MANY years. I know because I was in the hoibby in the mid 80's and couldnt get down there. Alwaysd wanted to join, but coudlnt.

I Dont know when or the reason they moved to Broward , but would imaginre holding meetings in different places would only creat "gypsys" in the club. I go only to Broward meetings you go only to Dade meetings etc...

I live i Miami and i drive to the meetings when i can, i have a great time everytime i go and met some terrific people and made great friends.

I highly reccomend going to the meetings, don't let the half hour drive deter you. It really is a quick drive and worth the effort.

step 1 use yahoo to host because of the larger bandwidth for the price ( almost unlimited ... its as good as it gets untill you host your own out of house and that is a pain but all you need tehn is a spare pc and a web connection with a static ip or some type of ip forwarding

nextstep install sql on ur pc
or install phpbb on the website if it is hosted from say yahoo..

please im me if you guys wish to do this.. it is really easy and cost next to nothing (bandwidth will be the most expensive unless u use a service like yahoo or host it your self.. this isnt a high demand fourm and any one with a cable connection could handle the load)

now... rc drives a lot of traffic to us.. so i think it is adumb idea. but if you want to do it .. its easy as heck.

we kinda have a perfect setup here, it is free and maintained by RC why complicate things and start our own forum. If people would just act right there won't be any problems.

x2! ;)

forums are pretty easy to setup, actually really easy, you don't have to make it difficult and use something like vb - I have offered to pedro helping out with something like this, but never heard back. i think it would be alot better for the club and it will definitely help the club raise more money by selling ads... thats basically all we are doing here for rc, not that i dont like rc, but it seems like they forgot that this website will be nothing with out its users... just my opinion..

I already feel the boot

I also support the forum bid and would contribute my technical expertise as needed. I have designed and maitained a few over the last 5 years. I also agree with Zurc, it makes sense for certain instances.

The one great thing about having an active board on RC is the traffic you get. It makes you much more visible to potential new members. However, with such a large and established club like FMAS, I doubt if it would make much of a dent.

Another issue about having a website is the maintenance. People move, drop out of the hobby, etc. Just make sure that more than one person has all of the pertinent passwords and passes them along!

With that being said, it is very nice to have a forum all your own. We set our own rules, but make no mistake, those rules are definitely enforced. We do not allow lfs bashing, either, but you can sell whatever you want (as long as its legal...we had to ban a member for selling undersized livestock he had collected). And the mods are the board members, so that can be good or bad, depending on the situation.

Although our forum rules very different, we do have reasons for each of them, and I suspect the RC mods have very good reasons for the rules they enforce as well.

It does take money to run your own forum, but it really isn't all that much. I can't remember the exact number, but it's pretty reasonable.

Just a few comments from someone who's been there.

Seems like PBMAS got a handle on it without any major issues. The template has been set and all we have to do is get a little help from the neighbors up north.

Oh we never forget it's our members that make this board, it's also our members that draw our attention to the club forums. It's a very few that think the rules don't apply to them. These forums are for sharing of information, when it crosses into just making a buck, we take a stand. It's really not that hard to understand. Don't hold it against us for trying to keep it a hobby. Blame the ones that are trying to undermine this.
As for the stores, I didn't insist that they be removed from the Google map, I could have. If I was half as 'crazed' as some people think, I would have. And most of you know about the stores, move on, send a pm if you think they need to know the name. We don't reward banned members,

Let's move on now. It's simple if you don't like us, no one is making you stay here. The rules aren't even that bad, I've seen worse.

Okay anyone who wants to get involved and help the club with things like a forum, definitely feel free to speak up at meetings and even come to the board meetings. We can use all the help we can get and this is just one example of some great ideas that can be brought to the table.

i cant make this meeting but for sure count me in

DC - i have nothing against RC or the rules in place. i would just like somewhere to go if we did want to talk about such in such stores or people or "maybe" even sell stuff non reef related to a group of friends to let them have first pick on something they could benefit from rather than just sell it to someone else. I also understand not promoting those stores or letting them post or on RC, but to tell us we cant say were we picked up a coral at, or if someone asks where we got something cool, we cannot tell them? Sure i can PM them but either way isn't the name being mentioned?

This isn't supposed to be a thread about these stores either i would just like to see FMAS with its own forum as a little something extra for us. It's not like we will stop using RC, I personally will still use all other aspects of RC except for "local" uses.

if we do get our own forum i would still frequent RC daily.... i love reefcentral and wont stop loving it but like chef said id just like that freedom

we should start a list of pros and cons to see if the goods out weigh the bads

so far the pros:
freedom of speach
previously banned club members can be a part again
more $ brought into the club through advertising

cons:
less traffic
cost

Its hard just to get enough people to fill board postions but a lot of people are more than happy to offer their time to start another forum. If you really want to help come to the board meetings and offer your help there, on the board. See how much work it is just to get all the things going to have a place for the meetings, set up frag swaps etc...

It took over a year to find somebody like Pedro to take the website and get it a great place for info. It is time consuming and constant work to keep it up to date. I think everybody! owes Pedro a round of applause. I think there were about 3-4 other people that said they would do it before that and had passwords etc and did nothing.

I really don't see a problem at RC. I do believe the rules that are in place are good. Sometimes some people may get caught up in some rule that may not absolutely pertain to them, but that is the nature of the beast when it is this large. there are a lot of people here on RC that only want to make a buck and that is not what it is about.

what about all our members who wernt just out to make a buck that are banned or on the verge of being banned?
btw i can never make it to the meeting because of a conflict in my work schedule

I Being an FMAS member would like to voice MY OPINION, MY.02

i like things the way they are! we being a part of RC not only allow our local members and non members visit here, but so do many others from around the world, i think this would be a negative to FMAS to part with RC and start our own forum. i am not opposed to our own forum but i dont think it would be an overall benefit to us as hobbiest in the end! we benefit so much from diverse point of views that dont always come from locals

Yes RC has rules and so would we in our own forum, right? but let me ask this? if a forum member broke our forum rules and he/she was banned? would our MODS react the same as the MODS here? if this person/s did something behind the scenes (like via PM ) to someone else on our forum like for example a MOD, a MEMBER,and/or official of the club, then they opened a store, would it still be allowed to be advertised? (mentioning anything about the store is still advertisement, good or bad)

MY point being is this: NOT everyone on the forum would have publically seen what EXACTLLY happend that caused this individual to be banned, would our FMAS MODS have to publically explain to everyone on the forum all the grusum details for EVERYONE to accept and agree why they were banned? should it be open for debate or some kind of vote? or just simply do what the MODS here have been doing, give a VERY brief explanation and enforce the rules?

(since our FMAS mods would only have our forum to deal with, i'm sure they could spend all day explaining in great detail all that happened, answer everyones questions about the issue, discuss back and forth, he said she said and so...)

who here would want to moderate this forum? (NOT ME, thats for sure)

or would it be a free-for-all?

i think these are all valid points and questions, you may correct me if a wrong

i am ALWAYS joking around in posts and this is the first serious issue i have taken part in, i would usually avoid this but i am giving my input from a perspective of "outside the box" and of nonimportance :D

although i dont "support RC" with $$$ i do support them and the rules they have, i personally have had NO ill effect from playing by RC rules

Emilio

There's always a reason, and we don't discuss that with anyone but the party involved. It's usually up to them to make it right if they want to come back.

Chef that was a hint. ;)

Now back to your quest, let's let this lie and we'll all be happier.
