umm...Palm Beach has both:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=308
and as we all know they have their own site.
I would highly recommend to anyone on the fence about whether or not to have our own forums to sign in as a guest user at either PBMAS or the Atlanta Reef Club and spend some time on there. Maybe hang out there for a month or so and revisit this issue.
I personally think you will find the benefits to having your own forums but this is a case where you can have your cake and eat it too. People who come to reef central looking for a Palm Beach Reef Club can find their web site quite easily. The traffic the FMAS gets from RC will not dwindle all that much, if at all.
Also, you are not taking into account the partnership that can be worked out with LFS's who imo, will gladly point people to local forums. These are places we could promote the site as well.
Again, as I have said, RC is great! I love it, I use it, and I will always use it. I wasn't always a contributor to the forums but I always read stuff here. I have nothing against the rule that was used to edit my post except for the fact that my post was edited when I never broke that rule personally.
Rules are rules and a local forum will have many rules as well. And they will have to be followed and people have been banned from local forums many times before. However, because of sheer size the rules can be more moldable to fit the needs of the local club. If the local club does not feel this is necessary then that is fine. It is definitely not necessary. However, from the looks of it, it seems like many members would perhaps like to see it happen. At least many of the more vocal (hence more participatory) members. Necessity is not the only measure here, simple improvement should be factored in as well. We don't need to settle on the status quo.
RC is great....our own forum would be better. This is of course, imho.
