DC, I think everyone agrees that RC is one of the best sites around and a great place for information but when you start to limit what people say because some bad apples fell off the tree, then you get what we've seen today. We all understand that some folks acted improperly but those folks are not around anymore. A current member who is abiding by the rules should not be hushed just because they gave some advice to another member who had no intention of promoting a banned member. The big picture here is not about certain stores that RC don't want mentioned but how the members are being scrutinized because of the actions of others.

Ok, I said enough, I go bye-bye now.

;)

Not trying to be pushy. Sorry if i am.

This is an example.

Lets say "fred" did something on here, like "selling his services" via "acrylic work", and got banned for breaking the rule of no comercial selling. how would that indivual ,as you say, "make it right"?

I really can give two S***'s about those two stores, i have never been to them and prolly will not go to them. I have my 1-2 stores that i frequent. one of them being CRF and when i find great customer service i stick with it.

anyways, last time i will touch the subject. i see emilio's point on the subject, maybe we can just tone it down to making a selling/trading thread for our local club then? I know some of us have frag tanks setup just to sell and make money or whatever maybe they can sell the stuff on the FMAS website or something. or to sell stuff non reef related so club members can have first dibs on something. ect. ect.

Every single one is different, and it's really up to them to figure it out, and for us to decide if we believe, or accept it.

but how the members are being scrutinized because of the actions of others.
I don't really see it that way. It would be simple to just say, ok and move on. In every instance there are several people that 'jump the bandwagon' to slam us. That is really not doing any good to anyone.

Ok moving on now.

Btw i'm not trying to slam you or bash RC in anyway. If it wasn't for this place i would still be trying to get my fish to live in tap water with table salt :eek1:

WHAT???? your are not supposed to use table salt??? since when? :eek2:

umm...Palm Beach has both:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=308

and as we all know they have their own site.

I would highly recommend to anyone on the fence about whether or not to have our own forums to sign in as a guest user at either PBMAS or the Atlanta Reef Club and spend some time on there. Maybe hang out there for a month or so and revisit this issue.

I personally think you will find the benefits to having your own forums but this is a case where you can have your cake and eat it too. People who come to reef central looking for a Palm Beach Reef Club can find their web site quite easily. The traffic the FMAS gets from RC will not dwindle all that much, if at all.

Also, you are not taking into account the partnership that can be worked out with LFS's who imo, will gladly point people to local forums. These are places we could promote the site as well.

Again, as I have said, RC is great! I love it, I use it, and I will always use it. I wasn't always a contributor to the forums but I always read stuff here. I have nothing against the rule that was used to edit my post except for the fact that my post was edited when I never broke that rule personally.

Rules are rules and a local forum will have many rules as well. And they will have to be followed and people have been banned from local forums many times before. However, because of sheer size the rules can be more moldable to fit the needs of the local club. If the local club does not feel this is necessary then that is fine. It is definitely not necessary. However, from the looks of it, it seems like many members would perhaps like to see it happen. At least many of the more vocal (hence more participatory) members. Necessity is not the only measure here, simple improvement should be factored in as well. We don't need to settle on the status quo.

RC is great....our own forum would be better. This is of course, imho.

I tried it for about 3 weeks, damn fish kept dying within a day so i thought i was being sold sick fish or something so i kept trying different LFS's... then i found this place and vola! I started using tap water and instant ocean!.

btw, im j/k. at least on the first part. the tap water part was true for awhile... and yes im on RO/DI now :P

F.Y.I. there are 140 Club forums hosted on RC, we are ranked #8 in the amount of post this forum has, that means there are only 7 clubs with more posts than us (and some are not that far ahead, not that its a race or anything) just something to think about

but do you think we would lose that number of posts if we had our own forum? thats a serious question and I dont know the answer. my gut tells me no but it would be something to look into.

my point is not if we would lose that kind of quantity of posts, it was only to show HOW MUCH TRAFFIC our forum has compared to the others here on RC and someone would have to be moderate it....No?

oy, i didnt know you could look that info up. thats pretty cool.

i actually counted it myself, seriously! i went screen by screen region by region then looked at all the post counts (there may be 1 or 2 clubs i accidently missed)

DC or any MOD, would it be wrong to ask if i am correct? (assuming the power is at your fingertips ;) ) PLEASE :D

No, the point is ANYWHERE there would still be rules;) If we make our own forum and someone cheats people on sales a few times, he'll get banned. Inevitably, after a little time, people will complain and whine that the scammer cant post and the new site is run by post editing nazi's.

We all know how to get in touch with all the people and stores you so cleverly listed. And the few that dont, have no problem creating threads titled "hey! How do i get in touch with _____?" to which 50 people immediately respond(there's been about 3 of them just in the last week or 2).

I think RC has been pretty good for us over the years. I'm really baffled by all the outrage over this tiny issue:confused:

Ditto!

Seriously most people here are complaining way to much, especially since many people here in the club don't support RC. Free moderating, free website! If this is not enough I think you all know where the door is...

forums are pretty easy to setup, actually really easy, you don't have to make it difficult and use something like vb - I have offered to pedro helping out with something like this, but never heard back.

Sorry I didn't get back to you, Zurc. Of all the IT guys on this forum, you were the only one who responded. Technically there are no obstacles in setting up our own forum. Our IHP provides a free one that just takes a few minutes to set up, no programming required. I did it one day to check it out, and it performs pretty much like RC.

The question of hosting our own forum has come up several times during our board meetings, and has never gained much ground. Among the reasons why are responsibility (moderators, we're all volunteers here) and liability.

All you web designers and programmers out there, your time and effort would be very much appreciated. Just don't expect any more than an atta-boy post, that's not what this is about. Fixing the club's website was one of the reasons why I joined this club. I'd met some members and was into the hobby, but the website was in pretty bad shape. It had not been updated in over a year. So I joined because I wanted to help, and learn more about the hobby from experienced folks.

If you're serious about it, come to the meeting this Thursday (OK, you can Tivo the convention) and let's discuss how you can help.

(edit) removed flame on the overpriced fraged the day befroe 1/4 inch frag seller who by all means should be considered commercial()
