or like Atlanta Reef Club?

there are a few reasons i can think of off the top of my head.....and i list these never having spoken to anyone about it.

1) you have to buy and maintain your own domain
2) you have to host it yourself
3) you lose access to any benefits gained from being a part of something national like RC (there are benefits)

just a few thoughts...i still think it'd be a great idea and Id like to be part of it if it happens.

FMAS has it's own website, was just trying to see if we could put a fourm up on it.

What types of benefits?

i would be willing to contribute a little $ if it ment people were allowed to talk about and sell what evr they wanted!

If you can get enough people to say what illal said... you can do it. You just need someone to get the ball rolling!

You would have to propose it to Pedro...he's the one maintaining the website these days. Then there are other logistics involved such as member/moderators, maintenance, etc. He can easily put in a "plug in" forum, but there is a good bit more that would need to be done and I don't know if he has the time to.

No matter where you moved it, you still wouldn't be allowed to talk about whatever you wanted. The majority of FMAS members think you should never badmouth a lfs, no matter what the reason. Anytime anyone does, 50 people jump down their throat with the "support our lfs no matter how bad they are" line.

I had suggested this a while back but got flamed and shot down for my recommendations. The PBMAS has a great website and I don't see why FMAS can't do the same. However, this would take some dedication and individuals willing to do the work for free.

Let's be careful of what we say before we get another thread closed.

ok let me rephrase that... if it ment we were allowed to say "hey this store" or "hey that store had some nice corals the other day" or perhaps u want to buy a coral from some guy who has a nice little frag setup, or get a sump or reactor built from this guy who does really nice acrylic work, u get the point? ;)
IMO its just gotten a little outta hand thats all... and i wouldnt be suprised if this thread got shut down too!

I would have no problem working for free to help maintain the website and fourms. And i too would also not mind contibuting $ to help out if it is needed.

I would probably join the club if they had I forum. Right now I kinda see it as a waste of money to join the club. I have no interest in events like Turtle releases. I would also join if the meetings and frag swaps were closer to dade county. Having meetings in central broward makes no sense since half the people I see on the forum live in dade. Somewhere in miramar or miami lakes so its central for everyone.

No, the point is ANYWHERE there would still be rules;) If we make our own forum and someone cheats people on sales a few times, he'll get banned. Inevitably, after a little time, people will complain and whine that the scammer cant post and the new site is run by post editing nazi's.

We all know how to get in touch with all the people and stores you so cleverly listed. And the few that dont, have no problem creating threads titled "hey! How do i get in touch with _____?" to which 50 people immediately respond(there's been about 3 of them just in the last week or 2).

I think RC has been pretty good for us over the years. I'm really baffled by all the outrage over this tiny issue:confused:

yeah i understand your point illal....but all forums are going to have to have rules....the difference is that if you own the forum you have the ability to classify posts......for example, the ARC has a forum that is called "rants and complaints." it is completely unmonitored by the ARC mods other than for inappropriate content (ie - bad words, nudity, etc). However, the posts do not show up on the homepage (which is fair imo.

Also, they have a category for items for sale, or a great one...the sponsor forum...which allows the sponsors to promote sales, new stock lists, etc.

there are a lot of advantages. As for the benefits of staying with RC, I havent ben here long enough to be sure what they are but there has to be some. Anytime you are part of a national (worldwide) organization like RC you get benefits. Im sure they are significant. However, there is no reason you cant have both. I think most people would belong to both.

The one great thing about having an active board on RC is the traffic you get. It makes you much more visible to potential new members. However, with such a large and established club like FMAS, I doubt if it would make much of a dent.

Another issue about having a website is the maintenance. People move, drop out of the hobby, etc. Just make sure that more than one person has all of the pertinent passwords and passes them along!

With that being said, it is very nice to have a forum all your own. We set our own rules, but make no mistake, those rules are definitely enforced. We do not allow lfs bashing, either, but you can sell whatever you want (as long as its legal...we had to ban a member for selling undersized livestock he had collected). And the mods are the board members, so that can be good or bad, depending on the situation.

Although our forum rules very different, we do have reasons for each of them, and I suspect the RC mods have very good reasons for the rules they enforce as well.

It does take money to run your own forum, but it really isn't all that much. I can't remember the exact number, but it's pretty reasonable.

Just a few comments from someone who's been there.

As i would belong to both. i mean i dont just use FMAS board but i look at all of RC, It would just be nice to have more of a freedom of speech on our own board.

Even if i droped out of the hobby i love running and opperating and designing websites and fourms as i have done for about 6 years or so, so even if i fade out of the hobby i would still love to help on the website/forums

Thanks for your input Torry

I dont see how there can be a discussion about freedom of speech when we aren't allowed to say that a stores tanks are covered in aiptasia, flatworms, etc. because they might not sponsor the next frag swap if we speak the truth.

we have members everywhere from palmbeach-broward-dade so broward is central ;)
yeah, but palm beach has a clubm why not make it a moving meeting? One time in kendall the next in plantation the next in boynton beach. How many of you in droward would be able to make it down to kendall at 7 or 730 on a week night?
