CO2 refills

For those of you that use CO2, where do you refill? Do you own your tank or is it a swap? I live in North Phoenix around Bell and 7th Ave. Just asking because I'm getting ready to set up a calcium reactor. Thanks.

I use to get my co2 bottles refilled back east at a welders shop. I had my own co2 bottles. Is it the same here?

I go to Canyon fire extinguisher at 35th and Indian School. Great service.

They are more than $1/lb though

You can also go to any homebrew shop to get co2, I go to the one on 63rd and Bell but there are some on the east side as well. I dont remember pricing though.

If you are doing a calcium reactor, I suggest an aquariumplants.com electronic regulator. It is more expensive but well worth it.

I haven't used the aquarium plants regulator, but Ive used many regulators to dose CO2 in freshwater planted tanks. Most regulators use needle valves which when your CO2 bottle gets low you will get what's called "end of tank dump". The needle valve needs a higher pressure to maintain its setting. Once the pressure in the tank/bottle drops the needle valve doesn't work correctly. What's nice about the aquarium plants regulator is that it is an electronic device, no needle valve. When it opens it lets one bubble escape. It doesn't rely on pressure like a needle valve. I also always use a pH monitor to maintain a certain pH level. So even with the end of tank dump, you are protected by the pH monitor. The pH monitor will open and close a solenoid to control the flow of CO2 to maintain your pH level.

I also use a ph probe with my apex to monitor. What's nice is being able to easily dial in my calcium reactor.

I have two aquariumplants.com monitor.

My girlfriend actually paid a little more and went to What ale's ya since she read they use beverage grade CO2. She didn't tell me what she paid, but figured it was worth paying more. I'm using my Apex to monitor the ph inside the reactor. I went with a standard regulator and the solenoid is plugged into the apex as well. I hope to avoid the "dump" as well as possible. I'm hoping going with the Vertex RX-C 6D I won't have to worry too much about a "dump" too soon since I read that they are really good at recirculating CO2. If it comes down to it, I can always get the better regulator later.

Thanks for the tips all!
