Collecting S. Gigantea in the wild (Video)

Who knew one day we would find evidence of gig stew. It's the craziest thing I have seen related to anemones.

About 20 years ago I was returning home from Tahiti. I had a cooler full of clams and anemones. As I was going through customs, the agent was looking over my claim ticket and asked "what is an anemone"? I told him - "they are invertebrates that lay on the rocks and eat small fish - they kind of look like upside down jellyfish." He gave me this sour look and passed me through customs. Only later did I realize he probably thought I was eating them! :)

LOL good story. I am sure the rules and regulations regarding bringing livestock like that have changed. Otherwise, it would be cool to go on vacation and bring a few clams.

Times change. Clams used to be fine. Then they were registered with CITES. Then they became aquacultured. Now I'm not sure where they are on the list... just that people know if they WANT to it isn't difficult to aquaculture thousands of them.

I hope to see the day when we get to the same place with S. gigantea.

Jelly fish salad is pretty popular at asian resteraunt. I've had it many time it's actually very good. The jelly fish itself probably don't have any taste but the texture is this crunchy and very nice. With some sauce, it's actually pretty delicious.

Agreed and you're correct that they do not have flavor, but a definite crunchy texture. I lived in several Asian countries for about a decade and I acquired a taste for spicy marinated Jellyfish and Sea Cucumbers which are a very popular appetizer in China and SE Asia.
