Collecting SPS today

I have started adding all the Korallen tabs. As for feeding the local store called petbox has frozen zooplankton and frozen baby pods. As you can see right now no fish in the tank so I turn off the pumps and wait for all the polyp extension the feed the tank with a baster.

Thanks everyone. Wild corals from tide pools are like Forest Gump said. "wild corals are like a box of chocolate, you never know what your going to get."

outstanding collection, could you please tell us what the water paramiteres are where you are collecting them?
alkalinty
calcium
salinity
temp
depth of collection
po4
nitrates
iodine
strontium
ETC?

Great updated pics, love that you can go and put them back on a new spot. Kinda a smaller version of the YouTube documentary "coral city" =).

Won't chocolate chip starfish eat coral? I see you have one in the tank, I was always under that presumption but unsure if it's true.

It is very true that they may eat coral. They crawl on top of it and extrude they gut onto a coral and eat it. But I feed silver sides daily. It leaves my coral alone.

Under 4 150w 10k for growth. I am not too concerned with color because I will return all corals to the ocean. If you read you will see I collect broken off pieces from the tide pools.

I am also in Okinawa and just curious if you have any literature on collection laws in Okinawa?
I am looking to set up a small tank and would love to have a couple small pieces hand collected.
I just don't want any issues with the government here.
Google searches and cites information has been somewhat unhelpful, and the language barrier doesn't help either.

Sorry I do not. I only know what we were taught when taking our diving classes. They talked about forbidden species and the fact you CAN NOT take anything with on a breathing apparatus. But I wouldn't take from the reef anyways. I now collect from tide pools after storms then return them.

Also note when going to local aquarium supply stores they always ask why I buy my fish. I explain to help their economy and they all say go collect them my selves.

Nothing new. Waiting on my new bulbs to see if I can get more color. We are over stocked on sps. I like to give them a couple months to color up. If they don't I will take them back out to the reef and the go to the tide pools at low tied and collect replacements. But the MH lights I am running now are almost 10k so I am getting lots of growth but not a ton of color.

Going to a bluer bulb doesn't necessarily make your corals more colorful, it just helps "display" the colors better. You can color up SPS under a 10k just as well as under 20k radium, they're just not as noticeable or displayed as well under the 10k. Why not add some LED actinics to see if the color is there already?

I have been looking for something to put on this 60" rimless but no. Luck.

Hi Jason, great thread!

I think the question above was if you tested the actual sea water params. I'd love to know what the values are (if different from your tank). :)

Are these the NSW reading or from your tank?
thanks

This is my tank. But when running it I keep it as NSW levels here. Only thing different is the temp. It is winter here so the temp is a little lower on the ocean
