Are sunpolyps (Tubastreae) common here? About 40 years ago I found a colony over an inch across on a jetty in Coney Island. Seems too big to have grown in a single season, so it must have survived a winter or two.

It was bright orange, attached to the underside of a rock about 3 feet below the surface at low tide.

Back then I used to catch lots of spotfin butterflies and the occasional four eye snorkeling around the jetties, so this is nothing new.

There is a relative here, Astrangea danae, aka Northern Star Coral. The polyps are generally clear/whitish in color with a white skeleton, though I have on occasion seen brown polyps.

Have not seen those, but I have not snorkeled in long Island for the last 40 years. This one was orange as can be, and looked just like the ones in Florida and the Caribbean.

Looks good Tom!
What kind of tang is that in your first batch of pictures? In the second batch what is the fish above the butterfly?
