Coloring up clowns

I've heard how foods containing astaxanthin will make your dull yellow/orange clowns color up to a brighter orange red color. But has anyone figured out what would help darkening of black clowns?

Certain types of anemones have an effect of the black coloration of some clowns. My true perculas were really muddy colored on the top halfs of their bodies for quite some time while they were hosted by my rose bubble tips. I switched in a heteractis crispa (blue tipped seabae) to host them and the black colors started to darken back up a lot. It is my understanding that some anemones cause clowns like perculas and occellaris to gain or loose black coloration. I've been feeding my own blend of foods for a while now and their orange color has improved a lot as well. I'll see if I can dig up some of the articles I read about the effects different anemone's have on clownfish colorss.

Ryan is right. It's going to take more than just the anemones species, though. To darken up "black clowns" you're going to need:

*the right genes and species (of Amphiprion)
*the correct foods
*the correct anemone

Hmm, even though I've witnessed this to some extent when my orange ocellaris was hosting certain corals. I only have nems in my cube with one pair, a black ice and a black phantom, hence the question. But interesting to know, I guess some nems have stronger stings so it would affect the skin of the fish.

ive read about BTAs lightening up perculas too, and regaining their color after being hosted by carpets. could not say mine did this. in contrary, the both percs have gotten more black, the smaller one more though, he now looks almost like the solomon island perculas. they look great in their RBTA.

i guess the difference between the two is, like stated above, determined by their genes. i feed 2 different foods that are supposed to contain astaxanthin and they look healthy! they have been in the RBTA for a year, and since then still have gained black area between the white stripes.

greetings, martin
