One question about the uniseal... What actually goes through/into it? Do you run pipe through it? Or would you be gluing the hose barbs into it? I'm assuming it's rubber and flexible, so I wasn't sure how it accommodated the plumbing.
It takes the correspondingly sized PVC pipe. I have ¾" uniseals in my tubs and I just cut a stub of pipe to go through. You can also use a street elbow if you're not planning on connecting anything on the other side, otherwise I glued a slip fit on elbow on the outside and have slip fit female adapter on the inside that I just snugged on by hand in case I want to remove it later. From that I have a hose barb with the tubing that runs to my pump.
The pipe fit in uniseals is very snug and I've found that thread sealant paste that you use for threaded PVC fittings acts as a good lubricant to get them to pass more easily.

Grrr... So I got the 50g Rubbermaid bin hooked up... All seemed ok, but first water change on one of my QTs and both fish inside died within hours. The bin was thoroughly rinsed (I was concerned because it shipped all exposed - not in a box), but now I'm afraid it must have been contaminated somehow. I think rather than try to clean it again, I will just toss it and get one of these:
