Compact Trash Can on Wheels?

I have two brute 44 gallon gray cans with lids on Dolley wheels made for them, Been using them for years and never had an issue with the wheels failing, You can pick them up at Lowe's or Home Depot

One question about the uniseal... What actually goes through/into it? Do you run pipe through it? Or would you be gluing the hose barbs into it? I'm assuming it's rubber and flexible, so I wasn't sure how it accommodated the plumbing.

It takes the correspondingly sized PVC pipe. I have ¾" uniseals in my tubs and I just cut a stub of pipe to go through. You can also use a street elbow if you're not planning on connecting anything on the other side, otherwise I glued a slip fit on elbow on the outside and have slip fit female adapter on the inside that I just snugged on by hand in case I want to remove it later. From that I have a hose barb with the tubing that runs to my pump.

The pipe fit in uniseals is very snug and I've found that thread sealant paste that you use for threaded PVC fittings acts as a good lubricant to get them to pass more easily.

Got it! Thanks so much!

I'll add that I was nervous the first time I used a uniseal (didn't believe it would work like everyone said it would) so I used an old plastic salt bucket to try it out just to convince myself. Still not a bad idea, if for no other reason than to make sure you have the right hole size

OK, I got it set up! Plumbed the Mag 9.5 with valves so that it can either mix the water in the container or send it to the tank for water changes. I used the uniseal on the container, which seems very snug and secure.

Anyhow, I have a few more questions... The first of which is, now that I can mix up 50g of saltwater at a time, would it be advisable to just leave the Mag 9.5 running all the time to keep it mixed? I'm guessing if I mixed it and then just let it sit, there might be some precipitation. I think I read about someone putting their pump on a timer so that it ran a few hours each day... What does everyone here do?

I just push big 55 gallon drums around on the floor. Our house has tiles, so it's not too bad.

No - any precipitation that occurs won't be due to mixing or lack thereof. Leaving your pump on would just waste energy. I have my power head on a timer and run it for a couple hours after I add the salt, then just leave it off.

Grrr... So I got the 50g Rubbermaid bin hooked up... All seemed ok, but first water change on one of my QTs and both fish inside died within hours. The bin was thoroughly rinsed (I was concerned because it shipped all exposed - not in a box), but now I'm afraid it must have been contaminated somehow. I think rather than try to clean it again, I will just toss it and get one of these:

Thoughts?

Those are what I use, without any issues. To answer an earlier question, I keep salt mixed at all times. I have a powerhead in the bottom of the container and a timer turns it on for a few minutes a couple of times a day. I just heat before using it.

Thanks, David. I just ordered one of those containers. I guess this could have been worse - I could have done a water change on my DT with that contaminated water. Anyhow, I should have the new container by week's end and will get that going.

My plan was to use a Sicce Syncra 4.0 externally and split the return, with one leg of the return going to a hose that can be fed to my tank and have the other leg of the return going back into the reservoir via a 3/4" bulkhead either on the top or on the side and use it for mixing the salt that way. How does that sound?

That sounds perfectly fine to me. You'll notice on mine, the return has a "T" on it, one side going to a valve with a hose bib, and the other returning to the top of the container, via a uniseal. The system works perfectly and haven't lifted a bucket in quite a while.

For what it's worth, I did rinse the new containers with a diluted vinegar a couple of times just to be sure. They were new but I didn't want to take any chances. Then rinsed with clean water and started using them after they dried completely.

Good luck.

Cool. Yes, I like the way you've got yours set up. I'll do something similar. And will definitely rinse the new container. I rinsed the old one, for what it's worth, but I don't know. I went to smell it after I noticed something was wrong and there was definitely still a strange chemically smell. I don't know. Maybe I could salvage this container, but I am too afraid to try another water change using it at this point. Just drained it and am about to throw it the hell out!

Thanks for your help. I wish I'd gone with one of the containers you use the first time around. I guess we have to make mistakes in order to learn though.

Yes, unfortunately sometimes the only way to learn is by doing, and it doesn't always end up the way we want. I actually started with a couple of Brute cans that worked great as well, but simply "upgraded" when I installed my permanent mixing station. I too would find another (non-reef) use for the other container or as you said, get rid of it.

I have gone to a Stenner two head pump that is set to change about one and a half gallon a night, every night from my 40 gallon mixing station about 20 feet away in the garage.
I am 2 months into program and see great results with the small daily changes vs. my typical 30 gal a month change.
