Concerned about MP40 build Quality

Hmm, I don't see Ecotech offering to repair this pump under warranty.

Nor will you. In my experience so far Ecotech has been carefull to avoid commitment or comment regarding problems in public forums, going so far as to delete threads that might be interpreted as unflattering.

I seem to recall a recently locked thread regarding Radions that lost PAR quickly, no personal attacks or shilling either hmm... It's curious how biased this community can be on certain subjects.

Ecotech (or any sponsor) can't delete threads on Reef Central. Perhaps you should stick to facts and not make them up.

A sponsor can request that a thread be closed or removed in their sponsored forum ("request" being key). We accommodate those requests (which are rare) because the sponsors pay for those forums. That does not occur outside the sponsored forums unless someone has an obvious agenda, and even then the threads are normally just moved to Vendor Experiences.

That's good to know.

Interesting thread.

I'd like to add my experiences to this thread.

I've got two MP40s. Slightly more than a year old.

I've had an issue that was never really solved by support. I figured out the problem and fixed the issue. I asked direct questions and never got answers. Like support is not reading what I write.

This doesn't fit my definition of 'great support'.

Response time was awful. Support must only work at 6am. No matter when I sent an email, replies were always the next morning.

My questions:
'Should the two bushings, black and white, turn freely?'
'Is there a problem with using a VERY small amount of plumbers grease (silicon based) to lubricate the connection between these two bushings?'

I find it unacceptable to pay almost $500 for a pump and be told, after I successfully trouble shot it and fixed it, that replacement parts were available - FOR PURCHASE! This is a huge red flag telling me they only care about the next customer. They saved a few dollars in parts but lost a customer.

Now I don't want to go on and on bashing support. I used to do tech support and it ain't easy. I'd like these issues out in the open so management can fix the problem in support. More training, more resources, better management? Something needs to be done!

I've spoken with EcoTech and I'm actually sending it in to them for them to check it out. They were very pleasant with helping me out. In terms of my experiences with them, it has been good so far. This time was no different. Last year, I had a problem with my dry side motor assembly that was well out of warranty but they were able to replace it and upgraded my white box to the Ecosmart Wireless as well (For a reasonable fee). I'll keep you posted.

I have a suspicion that if one of the owners of echotech marine responds to your thread first thing Saturday morning saying they will take care of you that they might actually take care of you.

Why come here to bash a company?

Why not let the op inform you of the outcome?

2-mp40s on my tank and I got exactly what I paid for. The best pumps on the market. They changed the game completely years ago. It's very easy to throw stones at those who innovate not imitate. You can keep that cheap crap from china. Ecotech service has been excellent and I will continue to support their products. The highest quality is rarely the cheapest price.

I couldn't agree more!

Let's keep this thread on topic as it relates to this particular incident, and not continue with posts debating the merits of various pumps.

It's not a failed seal. I asked if that are was supposed to be exposed to water and for the cap to pop off easily. They said it was for maintenance access so the pump (wet) could be serviced if needed. I really do like the programmability of these pumps and haven't know of any alternatives. They were the first I've ever heard if with such modes. Too bad they don't make anything for a future pico/nano build I'm planning...

I'm not sure who you are speaking to. I'm not trying to 'bash' the company, just reporting my experiences. Also companies can change, for both good or bad, over time. Often expansion is a trigger point for such changes.

I hope your experiences have all been positive. My experiences with support have not been positive.

Does anybody know what a PHONE is anymore?
If you want immediate assistance, pic up the phone and talk to somebody.
Otherwise I don't think you can really complain.
Email can get lost in cyberspace, lost in the shuffle, put on hold while PHONE CALLS are answered, etc.
I've sent emails and have gotten responses from various companies on evenings and weekends which is always impressive when it happens. But if I need some serious help, I know a phone call is usually the quickest way to get a response and the quickest way to get an issue resolved.

And if you really want a positive response from whatever company you are dealing with, don't air out your dirty laundry on public forums without speaking to a CS Rep first.

I couldn't agree more. I see it here all the time. Ecotech has always been great at taking care of issues for me. But when I need help in a hurry, I call. When I have issues over the weekend or questions where I am not in a hurry, I will ask questions here.

I take the back of my wet side every time I clean my pumps, which is usually once a month or so. Pretty sure the instructions say to do this. If this hasn't been cleaned in years I would say it's probably just some junk a tooth brush will take care of quickly.

MikeD-

Just from looking at the picture of your wet side I'm pretty sure it is a Gen1. It's actually been a while since I've even seen one since they were made nearly 10 years ago, very cool! Anyway, get in touch with our customer support and we'll get you back up in running as quickly as possible.

Way to go EcoTech! I know you guys take care of people!

Concerned about MP40 build Quality

So I was working in the tank today and cleaning out the pumps and I noticed this amber stuff coming out of the wet part if the pump in my tank. I looked at it closely and saw it was coming out from inside if the housing. I carefully propped the back off (never had to do that before) and it was a disgusting rusted mess in there! Under a year ago I had upgraded to the mp40wes controller and now this! I was a bit surprised about what could be leaching out. Could it have been a reason for any of my recent bouts with algae (phosphates) or even some tank death that I haven't had in all my years in the hobby? Just concerned here. It's my first mp40 I purchased new of the two I own. But the last one was purchased less than a year ago so I'd hope that doesn't have the same issues. Has anyone here experienced this? The pump itself still functions though. But it shouldn't be considered 'normal' right? I'd be afraid if anything that goes into the tank that reacts this way especially since I'm extremely careful of what I put in. I guess I'll cc this in both echo tech and equip forums for advice.

The same thing happened to my gen 1 MP40. I did get it used. A replacement magnet is $55. Not too bad, but I will call ecotech tomorrow for more info.
