condylactis anemones

I'm thinking about setting up a NC24 primarily for some gorgonians and rics and small shrimp species (sexy anemone, spotted anemone, pederson's anemone shrimp) and a YCG and a few other some smaller gobies/blennies, maybe a yellowtail damsel or a royal gramma or a firefish as well. lighting will be 2 24" T5HO bulbs.

the shrimp species are all symbiotic species, and I would love to give them an anemone to host, if at all possible. their most common choice in the wild is condylactis anemones, and since they're cheap, readily avialible and IMO quite attractive, I was considering including a few in the tank.

I've heard that they move around a lot, how true is this? how suited to the system are they? I could always go with another choice, like maxi-mini carpets or some flower anemones, and hope that the shrimp take to them eventually. or just include lots of rics, since they often host those.

I don't like Condy's. They do move around alot. I am about tired of looking in the tank and seeing the Condy right up against the Zoa colony, or reaching out and touching one of the other corals. Whatever it touches responds in a negative way, because it is, I am assuming, stinging the coral that it touches. They are a real P.I.T.A.

Oh, and by the way Moonstream, if you are still using the Stealth heater that is in your tank description, you should take it out of your tank and use your spare until Marineland sends you out a Visi-Therm. The stealths have all been recalled for electrocution, fire, explosion, and the best case senario, stuck on thermostat overheating your tank. I have experienced the latter scenario, and I don't want to experience the others. :eek1:

I have a Condy and it also moved quite a bit at first. Which means keep an eye on it and when it moves, you have to relocate corals accordingly. At first it stayed put for a couple of weeks then went 'walk about' for a while. Now it seems to have 'found its happy place' and settled in that spot. Doesn't mean it won't get the urge to move again but so far so good.

I love my Condy and so do the shrimp. At first the shrimp stole all its food but now it responds quickly when fed and the shrimp can't get to the food fast enough.

Not sure that I've ever seen a green condy...
But when I did keep 2 other condys in a 130g tank, they each found a spot they liked and stayed there for many years...(any anemone can/will take a walk!)
They also grew very large (12" tentacles) and changed colors a few times!
And they did host various clowns...tomato, maroon, sabae, fire...just no true or false percs, in my experience.

They're not well suited for your tank. These are LARGE anemones. They're named Condylactis gigantea for a reason. They are cool anemones though. If they are moving around allot, it's a sign that something is wrong.

I think E. crucifer would be a better choice for your system. It's common for anemone shrimp to hang out in them, and they can reproduce in captivity. They're all but bullet proof, and come in every color imaginable. Great little anemones IMHO.

I was under the impression that the genus condylactis had two species, gigantea and a smaller species, but I guess I was just remembering wrong. regardless, I have begun to think more and more they woudldnt be the best choice. as of now, I'm strongly considering one or more flower anemones, or (possibly and) some maxi mini nems. we'll have to see. I found my old 4 bulb T5HO fixture, so stronger lighting than I originally thought as well.

I have found some maxi mini to have some awesome coloration and in my experience less likely to move and once established Very hard to move. They are more of a substrate anemone.

yeah, thats what I'd read. I'll definitely end up with a few, I'm just not sure in what tank. they seem to be very pretty, hardy little 'nems, and they come in every color under the sun!

I have a awesome colored pink/purple one with purple tips. It has never moved in the few months I have had it. When it touces anything they just look unhappy but never kills it,also the tentacles on it look upset.

I second this advice.
