Ok, I've got an engineer goby with spots all over it. These spots are not as sharp and bright white as ich, more of a slimy scuzzy appearance. The fish is COVERED in it, but otherwise acting just fine, eating like a champ, and aside from its appearance, you'd never know it was sick. Today I noticed a single spot on my purple firefish. It's round, and has the same fuzzy translucent appearance. Am I right in diagnosing this as a fungus? If so, would melafix take care of this without harming my inverts (crabs, brittle star and LTA)

Can you post a photo? If it's covering your fish, how rapidly did it progress? Most of, what was believed to be, fungus that I've seen was somewhat isolated to one area such as the head or a fin/s. It may be something else.
Whatever the case I would look for something other than Melafix (natural based products for fish are a little like those for humans... sometimes they work sometimes not).

I would say it still looks like ick.

at first i thought it was ick as well; however, i've never seen a fish that covered in ick acting just fine, and this fish acts quite healthy. It eats voraciously, and the food I've been giving it (Ocean Nutrition #2 flakes) has garlic in it, and on top of that I've been soaking the food in additional garlic, with no change in the fish's appearance for the past week or so. I know the pictures don't really show it, but the fish has a generally hazy appearance as well. I would describe it as looking like a reptile that is shedding its skin.
