Confused as usuall

When ever I have a problem it seems you find out after the fact!! have algie was told to put in astrea turbo grasers they all died . Posted this was told they are a problem like this as far as dying. So was told put in mexican turbos . Am told they starve and die. Told you need crabs. Then told they kill snails. So what the hell are you suposed to put in a tank ? !! Every time something dies were told to check this that this that. We do all this and then some know it all says you don't listen or take the advise !! If you read most threads here most are not fun problems. Seems problems out weigh non problematic tanks. We only have two salt stores in my area and 1 stinks animals and tanks are filthy !! other is clean but I have trouble with keeping anyting alive from there. So I'm shure after many read my feelings I will be chastized and belittled by some as usuall !! Not having fun yet after two years of trying to make this hobby work !

Wow Ronny you have got to have the worst luck. from algae to everything dying. Has your tank ever been dosed with copper? It sounds like you have an underlying problem that hasn’t been indentified yet.
 
My wife baught it used two years ago it was set up but was real mess i knew nothing about a salt water tank and here I am. i baught a new 135 watt light a rena cal canister new heater . 25 lbs of live sand put on top of old sand think this was mistake LFS said to do it. Some more live rock. Had hair algie you could mow. I've turned tank to what it is i have before pics will post some time.I don't know tank history. but the snail problem just started some what lately. like I said don't find i can enjoy this hoby when I'm home All I do is combatt issues. My daughter and her boy friend have a tank as green as pea soup but everything is alive!! She says leave the darned thing alone!!

Ronny-----its a small tank. Suggest you qt the living things. Strip the tank down and get rid of that complete sand bed.
Scrub the live rock really well and start the tank cycling again with only one inch of medium grade argonite(new)
I know this is a pain but we have all had to do this at one time or another, sometimes with much bigger tanks.

If you haven't the time to do it---throw it on the back of your truck and drop it by my place and I'll set it up again for you.

So What doI do with my corals many are glued to my live rock ? Thanks for the invitation but thanks to you and your persistance Ithink I spelled that right got to keep plugging at it. Funny how it was a mess and came along and then just started to give me problems . What I realy need to do is get my 75 going with Richards complete package!!

I dont know if my assumptions are right, but I took a few key comments from your previous post: You bought an old mess of a tank- I can now understand why you are full of problems (and you dont know the history!): copper, tap water, and god only knows what was added to that tank prior, and it was a mess for a reason!

Also, If I know your situation from previous posts, you are on the road a fair bit. I hope your daughter with her pea soup tank isnt looking after yours while you are gone! You have no IDEA how much food is going in there, no testing, no WC's, etc!

My suggestion is to set up the new tank right. get a good skimmer, sump/fuge, carbon/gfo reactor, ATO, and start properly. you are probably fighting the original owners battle.

Let it go, cut the lights, start new, and move whatever is alive (aside from rock and sand) to the new one. Leave the old tank dark for a month or two, and start to prep it for a frag tank or something like.
 
... I forgot. Your LFS are not much help (to be polite as possible), used car salesman of the fish world. Useless. Check here, then buy there. Turbos wont die of starvation, hermits "may" kill A snail but wont wipe out a herd, and ditch the cannister filter, may be the brunt of your problems if it isnt cleaned weekly at the least!
 
Stricknine I was told By Live Aquaria teck supt when I first got this set up and was trying to improve it that a Filstar rena cal canister was a good set up with liverock and live sand. And to clean monthly and change media . I do this . i once left this filter off 3 days by mistake tank looked like heck .in just 3 days. So whats the deal with this set up ?
 
Cannister is fine if you keep it clean. Most people are lazy and dont do the cleaning then blame the filter for thier problems.
 
I eat steak. I love steak, tenderloin preferably. When a few steaks get delivered to my door, I'll cook two. One for me, one for my wife (dogs dont get no steak). If there are any more steak than the 2, they wind up in the garbage. Stinks like hell.

Now lets imagine I get 10 steaks a day, 8 go in the garbage. The garbage man only collects once a month, so they sit in the garage (cannister). 3 days in, that garage is putrid. 5-7-10-14 days later, I wont have any friends over due to the stink, and may not be around myself! Polluted. Because I have a cannister which stores my garbage and not a well maintained skimmer which dumps my garbage preferably daily, carbon which is the febreeze of the aquarium, and the air cleaner AKA GFO.
 
I think it's funny when people say don't get hermits because they'll eat your snails. By that logic, don't get fish, they'll eat your amphipods. I've lost a total of 2 ceriths to my growing hermits. It's a bit like feeding steak to a dog ;), but they are healthy, this is natural, and snails are cheap.

An Emerald crab is a good pick, IMO. Mostly just eats algae. Will eat a bit of meat from time to time, but doesn't kill snails. Only eats corals when starving.

Honestly tho, if all your snails keep dying, then something is wrong. I've had 3 margarites for 6 months. They are a cold water snails so aren't supposed to live long in 79 to 80 degree temp, but they are still doing just fine. My hermits only eat the ceriths, and only when they need a new shell.

Can you give us a photo of your algae problem so we have a better idea of what you're dealing with? And what are your parameters?
 
I am not saying to not use a Skimmer.

You should use a skimmer and it should be rated for over twice the size of your tank.

But, Also having a canister for polishing the water is a good thing IF you keep it CLEAN. I clean my Canister every two weeks with the water change.

one hour of skim smells alot worse then 3 months of a canister.

The problem has been long solved and majority of the algae is gone. I just left some here and there on purpose for snails and my twin spot goby to eat (he really seems to enjoy them).

I can honestly say it was a lot of work to get it back to normal. Continuous water changes, manually picking all the algae off the rocks (took several hours) but I got it done.

Think of constructing a reef tank as well .. construction. Even when done properly it's going to get messy as hell before it looks good. Keep at it and you'll be fine.
