conspecifics meaning

I've been looking for fish for my new tank. Many say It is aggressive towards its own species and conspecifics at times, but peaceful towards other fish in the tank. When I look up conspecifics it says of same species. Why do they list like that if it means the same thing?.

Basically similar species, if they look a like or eat the same thing the new fish will be seen as a threat

Ok so all my fish eat brine shrimp so the all won't get along, I think they do so I don't think its a food thing. I always thought it meant like sailfin tang is peacful but not with other tangs. I know that not true since i see tanks with many different tangs. Most tangs have that statement

Not the food you feed... the food it would seek out it the natural habitat. A tank can often only support one fish for each "niche." If two fish occupy the same space and natural food source, you're likely to have fighting - more so if they look like each other.

Tangs... that's a whole different discussion, and seeing some get along in some tanks doesn't mean it works in every tank with the same type of tang

Ok maxxedman tell me what kind of peaceful tangs I can put in my new 240

You will find a list of tank sizes and species suggestions in the sticky notes atop this forum.

Go by the sticky Sk8r pointed to at the top of the reef fish page, only pick one tang from each genus. There are people with multiple tangs of the same family, but they usually introduce them together and do see some aggression

Ok after more research I think I have figured it out. The scientific name of a yellow rang is Zebrasoma flavescens a sailfin tang is Zebrasoma veliferum a blue tang is Paracanthurus hepatus a powder blue tang is Acanthurus leucosternon a convict tang is Acanthurus triostegus.
So the first part of the scientific name is the conspecifics. So the yellow tang and the the sailfin are the same conspecifics and the convict and blue powder are same but blue tang is different from all.
