Controllable Powerheads

I am currently using Maxi Jet 1200 powerheads with the Sure Flow adapters to increase their flow. These are not the newer MJ Pro model. Lately they've become noisy and since the aquarium is near the tv room, the hubby is disturbed. Budget is a concern, so the Vortechs are out of the question. I've contacted JBJ about their Oceanstream line and CoralVue and neither of them is compatible with my DA controller. I'm not a big fan of the Koralias since I think their range of motion is limited. Any suggestions?

did you try soaking your MJ's in a vinegar bath, Eileen?

I agree on the vinegar route since you ruled out most of the other options.

I have routinely given them both good soaks in vinegar and I actually think they are noisier afterwards. So, here's another question: If the only occasion when they are controlled is when I suspend the flow during feeding, might they still work? It seems to me that would be equivalent to unplugging them. I do not use them in a wave pattern.

Have you tried replacing the impeller? My mj's get noise and a simple impeller always fixes the noise.

I use the impellers that come in the Sure Flow kits and both of them are relatively new. I think if the stock impeller produced enough flow, the noise wouldn't be bad.

This gets my vote. I'm a big fan of tunze powerheads. I've been running two of them for several years now.
