Cool Fish on Diver's Den

Are Moorish Idols generally hard to come by? I only ask because my local store has them all the time. I know they are a tough fish to keep, but didn't consider them rare. But now that I think about it, I do rarely see them on DD. Such a cool fish.

Nope, not rare at all, just rare on DD due to the fact that it's likely eating and fairly primed since they keep the fish for several weeks before selling. Most DD fish are fat and happy upon arrive (most) which means that a DD Moorish Idol will likely be a LOT easier to keep than your average, which is why the one in question sold in about 1 minute :lolspin:

I really don't like the look of that McCosker's in today's DD. Is it just me or do the fins look abnormally small? Is it just transitioning over to a male and that's why...? I was debating on grabbing him when I saw it in the sneak peak along with another fish, but now I'm unsure :(

i got my mi from dd about 6 months ago and has been the easiest fish i may have ever had. it ate like a pig from day one and has not stopped. i do have to feed it at least four times a day.

If I had a large enough tank I would definitely get a Moorish Idol from DD as opposed to priming one myself :D

It's a young male, look at the length of it. I think you'll be fine with either it or just getting one from LA. I got mine from LA and it's an awesome fish. Very healthy and was eating like a pig out of the bag.

I was debating between the McCosker's or going with the Red Tail Flasher from a few days ago (initial phase). I currently have two wrasse in my tank, a Royal Flasher and a Rose Band Fairy Wrasse - I'm thinking the McCosker's or Red Tail Flasher since the current two wrasses are mainly red/purple and pink/purple, and I figure that the McCosker's/Red Tail will bring out a nice coloring with the orange tones. (The Red Tails basically look like a McCosker once male... With a bright red tail :p ).

Thoughts? I'm obviously going to keep the new wrasse in an acclimation box for 3 or so days. My current wrasses get along except for the occasional (expected) charge from the fairy to the flasher (literally just a charge that stops as soon as the flasher swims away, no chasing or biting occurs).

The McCosker's sold before I could decide... So, I grabbed the Midas Blenny and the initial-phase Katoi Fairy Wrasse that's been on there for a couple weeks (they discounted it from $199 all the way down to $129... These guys are pretty rare and look kinda like a large McCosker's with huge fins that have unique coloration which is why I leaned towards the Katoi over the Red Tail). Keeping my fingers crossed that the other two wrasse in my tank let the Katoi in without issues (the Katoi will be in an acclimation box for a few days, but I heard my Rose Band can be a jerk to new arrivals... but he gets along with the Royal Flasher without issue so I'm thinking they'll be fine since he's already "used" to another peaceful wrasse in the tank with him).

Order was $174.98... $0.02 away from free shipping... So I added a trochus snail to my order for $2.50 to save $30 in shipping costs :p ! Also had a 15% off coupon and $11 in reward points from my last order so the total was only $150 and change shipped. :D

Really enjoyed him so far. Very active, hasn't bothered anyone. I don't keep shrimp with the mystery and flame hawk and all, so I can't vouch for their CUC-friendliness.
