I'm pretty sure they are protogynous hermaphrodites (female -> male), though I haven't actually tested it by putting two known females together to see if one changes to male. But juveniles I raised developed to be male when raised alone or female when growing up in the presence of another dominant specimen.
Males have clearly longer pelvic fins and their heads are rounder.

I know they aren't rare, but the pearly jawfish is one of my favorite fish. I am really excited about getting one (or a couple) for my new tank.

I really like these guys as well. I might get one soon if they have some more, or if no one buys this one.
If you haven't got it yet wait and order a pair of yellow heads from KP Aquatics when they come available, my wife loves hers
i just went to KP aquatics' website to look up the pearly yellow headed jawfish and i noticed they said that juveniles will then change gender to what is needed in a tank. is that true?
Wow i want one
How about this guy for a large Reef tank like mine

Any idea what those yellow hawkfish would go for?
