could you keep a Garibaldi Damselfish (Hypsypops rubicunda) with the Blackfoot Lionfish (Parapterois heterura)?

how big would the tank need to be?

I would not try this combo personally. I feel that the Garibaldi would end up tormenting the lion.

It seems from what I have read and seen that the cold water species are more a species tank. I was thinking a Blackfoot and the pitted stone, but was told that wouldn't work because of mouth size. If you got two cool Blackfoot specimens that would look nice.

Not all cooler water species are best kept in a species only system, but some as rayn stated are.

The thing to consider about lionfish is that while they are predatory fish they are prone to being pestered by more aggressive fish. The Garibaldi is just a flat out mean damsel that just happens to get HUGE.

+1...you'll end up needing a good-sized tank for a garibaldi, and the poor bluefin would likely never eat. Even tho ours was a good eater, it wasn't voracious and was petty "particular" about it.

As for the erosa, it MIGHT be a fit, but we'll have to see how big it gets. So far, it's acting a lot like a C. multibarbus.

Do you have the cold system up and running? I'm very close to setting up my cold system. My aim is to duplicate the reefs of catalina, CA

We currently have two temperate setups up and running. What temp are you planning to run your Catalina biotope at? I can tell you that the local inshore waters here rarely hit 70*F during the hottest summers.

I plan to run the system at 65*F and see how it goes. I will be using a Deltec cooler along with a 1/3Hp chiller to cool the water. This will be a new venture for me, do you have some recommendations?

I was just curious as to what you're keeping, tank size, what temp you're running, etc.

FWIW, we've found that bluefin lions seem to do best for us at 63*F.

It's a 90gal. The tank will mainly start off, with a few baby Garibaldi along with Catalina gobies. I hohe to include a colony of strawberry anenomies, and a handfull of shoreline invertebrates.

The tank will most definitely house a Garibaldi. The idea is a single pillar to cover most of the overflow. I love the variety of algeas and kelp around Catalina.
