cooling fans shorting out?

My cooling fans have little LEDs on them so when they are on I can tell. They usually kick on overnight because the light on the refugium is close to the temperature probe. Came down this am to find them blinking. The fans were pulsing like they wanted to start but wouldn't turn over.

NOTHING has been touched or moved back there. What would I check? Is the power supply shot? Any tips?

FWIW I tried them in a few different outlets, same result. Lights blink. Fans pulse.

I'm guessing power supply, but it's just a guess. Nate is really good with this stuff, hopefully he will chime in.

check for a loose connection - your fans are daisy chained together with those white connectors. reduce down to one fan and wiggle the section which has the heat shrink tubing on it (about 1/2 way up the power line). I soldered those connections and heat shrank - would be a little surprised if the connection broke. then gently wiggle the wire going from the power supply to the white molex connector.

If you can resurrect the ancient multimeter see what the voltage on the lines are.

is that power supply fixed voltage or variable(has a slide switch on it)?

Fixed voltage. Seeing as nothing was touched, I'm guessing its the power source. No outages or surges. Just stopped workin. Connections all in tact.

I HATE electrical issues!

Out of curiosity, what brand/model are the existing fans, supply, temp sensor? Are they controlled on their own or via your reef controller?

If you do get new fans i would be interested in looking at the old ones some time just for kicks.

Off topic, but this reminded me - Pascal, we forgot about the LED supply when I was at your place the other day! The two frags are doing well btw and your "Gary's Gorg" is definitely different than mine, it is darker and the polyps are less dense and bigger.

I'd have to believe its the power supply as well. New one is on the way. The old supply is one I got off of Amazon for like $8 and was rated to cover the 4 fans. I got the fans from new egg for like $6 a piece after a rebate. Keeping the fans for now. They appear thinkin getting power. LEDs light up. Fans tick. Assuming there was a short in the power supply. Had them on my controller to click on @ 79 degrees.
