Coral Beauty in 8g?

I have an 8 gallon Biocube on the desk in my office.

My business parter who had reef tanks years ago and is old school wants me to put a coral beauty in the tank. I am skeptical, he thinks it is OK?

What do you think?

No the tank is way too small for a Coral Beauty Angelfish. They get get too large for a 8 gallon and they need plenty of swimming room. I would say the minimum tank size would be 40 gallons. If you really want a fish for your tank look into Gobies such as Clown, Neon, Masked, Trimma, Greenbanded, etc.

MY 8 year old is fine in the closet.

;-)

Anyways, my business partner is still skeptical... he remembers when people said you couldn't do a salt aquarium under 30 gallons, especially without a protien skimmers...

Who knows, maybe in a few years people will have a different opinion.

He says, these fish are yanked out of the ocean, thrown in a half filled 5 gallon bucket, bounced around in a boat, trucked to god knows where, shipped across the ocean, packed in holding tanks with hundreds of other coral beauty (which aren't supposed to be kept together), then when they reach the retailer sent home in a drop of water... and you think they can't be kept as the only fish in a peaceful 8 gallon aquarium.

THESE ARE NOT MY WORDS, THEY BELONG TO MY BUSINESS PARTNER.

Thanks for helping our debate

Absolutely a bad idea. That's just too small of a space for a fish of that size to live.

Why does that fish need more space than say my 4" A. Ocellaris and its mate? People say no problem to housing A. Ocellaris in 8g.

I'm not saying I am going to, my business partner can understand objections.

But, I am curious...

I think the rationale for keeping a clown in a small area is that they usually host in an anemone and rarely venture out from it. And if they do it's just for a short period.

I don't know the lifestyle of an angelfish, but I assume they have wider ranges than a clown...

I understand the 'rationale' that is fine. I have a pair of ocellaris in my 50 without an anemone... they pretty much swim about a 3 foot section.

In anycase, that is an evolutionary thing.... why can't the coral beauty begin that evolutionary thing in my tank?????

why can't the coral beauty begin that evolutionary thing in my tank?????

Many evolutionary things involve the mass die off of many, many, MANY!!!! species that are not adapted to a certain environment or radical event until one with a genotypic/phenotypic fluke randomly survives. Your Coral Beauty might be one of the many many many :p

isn't that why tank bred fish survive better and all the fish from the sea we take die more frequently?

FWIW, an odd fish migh be more resistant to a preditor and that fish is able to propogate and become more prolific and this is where evolutions goes... the 'mass die off' is due to lack of evolution:-)

ROTFL

If you're willing to go through thousands of Coral Beauties, then more power to you. I don't have that kind of wallet.

And mass extinction is part of evolution :)

ROTFL

What is: ROTFL?

I disagree.

not withstanding the coral beauty argument.

Evolution starts with an aberation that allows for further existance.

evolution does NOT cause death +->< 'or there abouts...'

think about it.

I'm not one that is a big fan of keeping any fish in an 8g. It can be done, but I don't think the angel would be happy. Angels are free swimming fish, they don't perch like a goby. No, they're not gonna need as much room as a tang, but I think any free swimming fish of that size should have at least 30g to swim and be a fish.

"Evolution" will require more time.

You're thinking adaptation. Evolution is the brutal process in which unsuitable organisms are weeded out, while those who are "lucky" enough to be genetically disposed to survive, do. Your coral beauty most likely falls into the "unsuitable organism" category.

Well you could survive in a little 8x8 prison cell but I don't think you would be to active and fun to watch now would ya????

dude just go buy the fish, you are going to anyway regardless of what people try to tell you on here. your business partner apparently knows everything and doesnt need the help of people on this board
