HI, guys I have a problem with this coral and I want to know if someone can help me.
I have this coral for 5 months. It had grown a few centimeters, but recently I note that when the lights turn on the coral close, and then 4 or 5 hours later it seems to open a litlle bit.
When the moonlights are on at night, the coral is open.
First which coral is it? I want ot first identify it in order to read about it.
I will post two pictures, one whit the coral open at night with moonlights and the other with 2 T5 HO 39w blueplus lights.
One hour later it comes a 250w hqi 10000K.
thanks all
diego

It's difficult to tell. It's either a Colt Coral (Nepthea) or a Kenya Tree (Capnella). When it is closed up, run your finger along the stock. If it feels smooth, then it's Nepthea. If it's rough, you are feeling the spicules of the Capnella.

Either way, They have to eat. Some will eat during the day and some will eat at night. Mine eats during the day. There really isn't a problem with it opening at night or closing during the day.

thanks.. so you think that the closing during the day is not a light problem?
Does this coral need to be feed? or it can be just with lights?
thanks

I maybe wrong , but I thought colt corals were Klyxum, not nepthea.

AH, just another downfall of using common names :) There is a chance that it could be Klyxum as well.

No, I don't think it is. The coral knows what's best for itself, and if it closes during the day for some reason or another, it should be fine. Even if it was supposed to open during the day, there really isn't much you can do beyond basic tank husbandry.

Let me put it this way. Corals are Animals. Animals need to eat. Just because something can sustain itself off of light because of a symbiotic relationship of some kind, doesn't mean that it can solely live on that forever. Corals must be fed. Most of the feeding that happens in our tank is never seen, though. I would play around feeding cyclop-eeze, possibly mysis if the polyps are large enough, and maybe rotifers and enriched brine shrimp.

Looks to me like Lithophyton, i think it is now newly described as Nephtea. I have the same one.

No need to feed, it doesn't eat CyclopEeze or similar food. Maybe it feeds on smaller food or Phyto.
