Common names: star polyps

Difficulty Level: Star polyps are extremely tolerant and a great choice for beginners.

Feeding: These corals are primarily photosynthetic, but may catch some small particles with their feathers.

Lighting (Level 5 to 10):Star polyps will adapt to almost any type, and level of lighting. They will grow towards the light source, so keep this in mind when planning coral stocking placement.

Water flow: Star polyps will adapt to any flow conditions.

Placement: Star polyps*are one of the fastest growing corals available to the hobby and they often shadow out of other corals and may even take over an entire aquarium. They grow towards the light source, so take care when placing them so that other corals won't be in their path.

General: Star polyps are often referred to as a weed coral due to their rapid growth. Be sure to plan for the future of these corals in your tank.

One LFS here has a green star polyp tank that actually looks quite spectacular.

Speaking of Green Star polyps. This was ship from Florida to NY. Took 5 days in a box delivered by USPS. Delayed 1 day. Fingers crossed that they still alive. Or are they dead :(

In the tradition of pulling the trigger on things that I shouldn’t do, I recently got a frag of green star polyps. To my amazement, they’ve already started spilling over onto the live rock where I placed the frag. I’ll definitely end up making that piece of live rock an island in the sand.

Fingers crossed. GSP are a very hardy coral, they may make it.

I think some will survive. Just be sure and hit it with a turkey baster or a quick shot from a power head every once in a while to sweep away any dead tissue. A better option might be to use a gravel siphon…that way the dead stuff doesn’t throw your chemistry out of whack

Yup. Been doing that. Quick brush and using the power head. Thanks for the reminder.

How do you know if they are bleaching/melting away?
If it’s dead, it’ll be sloughing off within a day when you “sweep” it. I wouldn’t physically touch it with anything. The white is concerning as griss mentioned…especially if you see bubbles forming within the white stuff.

It looks like it's just covering. I can kinda see the purple encrusting part under some of the white.

Update. 36 hrs. 2 frags Still not opening. 99% dead. Now the question, refund or reship. Leaning towards refund if they doing the same exact slow shipping...

I'd go for a refund if available. It's unusual they would ship it USPS in my opinion as most coral is shipped overnight due to temperature. If you're willing to swing overnight shipping, I have a good bit of GSP and can send you a good sized piece. Only thing is mine grow on to the sand so likely wouldn't be on a frag plug but could easily glue it down with the sand it sticks to. I would just need to get proper packing materials unless I reuse one of my larger fish boxes.

Agreed Shane, I’m a little confused with a vendor shipping coral this time of year via USPS instead of overnight.
