Peter. This is probably a little late, but I use this RO unit for my large reeftank system.
http://www.freshwatersystems.com/s-118-ge-merlin-720-gpd-tankless-ro-system.aspx
It pumps out 720 gallons a day at 0.002ppm. I find it's invaluable when I need a lot of water in a short amount of time.
It's fairly inexpensive considering the volume of water it produces. On a tank the size of yours it will take for ever to produce adequate amounts of water with a standard 100gpd unit.
Just a thought.
that is an RO only system, no resin, will not provide water quality compared to an RO/DI system
Links are fine, but if they consider it commercial in nature, they edit it.
Hi Peter and gang! Been lurking since the beginning. Enjoy MACNA!
Good points to both of you. I have two units that produce 200 GPD in total. So in two days I can produce 400 gal. With a three week major water change cycle planned I'm pretty sure I can manage the volume requirements which I think will be in the 250 gal range + or - 50 GAL (we have yet to decide). The mars Bars are expected to benefit from the display tank discharge for water change as well. There is an auto top off set up for ro/di pure water for all tanks as well.
Good point Elliott........although I suspect you might get lucky depending on the water quality of your source.
Peter
I would have thought you would have set up a system similar to Randy's where the water is changed out automatically by the hour or daily?
I believe that you would not have to do the major water change in that case??

There are many ways to skim the water change cat. How you do it depends on why you are doing it. If you are just removing secondary metabolites (toxins from corals), and DOC (dissolved organic carbon), then Randy's system will work well. If you wish to remove POC (particular organic carbon/detritus) then a larger water change with substrate and rock cleaning.
Larger manual water changes minimize the chances of malfunctioning equipment as well.
Sorry if this has been asked, but I noticed you have roughly an inch of substrate. Is there intention to make a D(eeper)SB or is it purely esthetic? I'm a BB man myself so the question is pure curiousity more than an applicational challenge.
haha, i posted awkward comment! is that a real shark mouth or something?
You are correct. It is about an inch and barring what critters do to it I will keep it that way for the esthetic.
Peter
We rake it twice a week......

Peter. I also rake mine twice a week.
I love your gadget.
Is it custom-made? (the one at the end)
It's definitely a Kent algae scraper. Looks like they took the plastic scraper insert and glued a comb to it with some teeth knocked out...

Hi Peter, Hi Mr.Wilson
Sorry for stopping by so late to say hi. I think you are helping a lot of people by providing all this amount of quality information that is usefull to everyone including me. So thank you for this thread.
Last night I realised I should come and congratulate both of you in person when I found out about MACNA. Is a 15 hours flight but I think is worth it to meet people like you.
I will go now because I only have three hours to sleep before the long flight to Orlando.
