You can all contribute to the book. I'm taking the Tom Sawyer approach, but instead of you guys painting a fence, it's editing a fish book :)

I'm dusting off some old posts about fish & coral acclimation, QT&HT (quarantine & hospital tanks), and fish & invert disease identification and treatment. After I've sifted through it and I'm completely sick of working on it, I'll post it in this thread. You guys can let me know if it needs to be more or less technical or detailed. Also the general direction of the writing. Let me know what you like and don't spare my feelings with what you don't like.

It's a hard subject to read and absorb, and an even harder one to try to teach and explain. I remember my first job at a fish store, I had ten years experience keeping fish so I thought I knew it all. It wasn't until the first customer asked me how a marine tank works that I realized that I didn't know all the answers and I had absolutely no idea how to explain it to someone who knew nothing about it. More than 20 years have passed since then and my current goal is lowered from teaching someone how a marine tank works to convincing them that I know how it works. I've yet to convince myself and the fish and corals definitely aren't buying it so it's gonna be a slow process :)

These first topics (QT/HT, acclimation, livestock health) aren't the fun ones like aquascaping or modifying equipment, but they are one of the most overlooked and important.

Mr. Wilson, I can tell you that there were a couple of times where you took the high road and gave very eloquent synopsis of complicated subjects with an attitude that was NOT condescending and hence extremely helpful. All too often we are afraid to ask the obvious and when someone takes the time to fully answer a question we were too embarrassed to ask it raises the enjoyment of this hobby by a quantum factor.

Also I cannot stress enough just how beneficial Chingchai's thread was, in the sense that it was organized, thorough and full of rich detail for each chapter in the journey. The steps he followed in preparation were well documented and I believe represented sound practice for this domain. He listened to advice and often shared concerns with the forum community in a way that was atypical to the normal experience. I am sure that many were not aware that Chingchai had already been recognized for TOTM for a smaller precedent tank and that his experience carried over into this build. His vision was very well articulated at the outset and his execution was second to none. I'm sure he would be happy to have you include some elements of his build in your book. You have my permission to use any part of my build as you see fit.

Speaking of TOTM ........I think Chingchai's build is ready for a nomination. How does that happen? How can we nominate Chingchai's tank for that honour? I think he is ready as it is a fabulous example of what is possible in a remarkable period of time with good discipline and determination to ensure best practices are followed. He has also been a great asset to this forum in that he has listened and given freely of his time to answer all questions as well as taken the time to include us all in the journey.

The custom electrical switch boxes give me one location to get a visual map of all electrical activity in the room. The red light means there is live current going to the device. The green light means the device is using that current. The toggle allows me to kill any device in the room if necessary.

Ooooh me like!! :bounce3:

Great job Peter - the whole thing is fantastic.

Peter,
They are the red mangroves. Let me know exactly how many you want. If you want more than i have left as many people have been asking for them at such a cheap Price. I will order more. Sea u Marine wants 20 dollars a piece. I can do 75% better and if u want a lot i can see what we can do.

I would keep them in either miracle mud or sugar sized sand (oolite) and under a light source such as daytime T5 or spiral florescent bulbs but knowing you . You like the classy lookT5s would would well. One important note, it is good to spray the leaves with RO water once every 2 days with a spray bottle.

Send me a PM if you want the mangroves, just in case i miss a post here by accident
Rob

Rob, I'm waiting for the second CL system to see how much room I have left. there is an acryllic stand for the chiller to rest on and I do not know the exact dimensions yet.......sorry to take so long on this, my hope is that the chiller arrives this week.

Ebay has always worked out good for me when buying mangroves, seems to be the cheapest place.

You know digitalchrisg, I must be the only person on the planet that has not bought anything off EBay. Someday they'll put me in a museum I think. Thanks for the info........

Mr. Wilson you should really get started on that book! Put me on the pre-order list. :)

Peter, I don't remember if this has been mentioned already, but are there any plans for remote viewing (webcams)? You may need several as all the viewers in this thread fight to gain control of the camera.

There was a thread a while back about a large tank at a game development company that had a plastic bubble in the top of the tank to hold a camera. The camera swiveled 360 degrees and gave a fish-eye view of the tank. It was pretty neat. They had to be diligent about keeping the camera housing clean though otherwise the camera was cloudy, so it would have to be added to your maintenance list. Just something to consider! Here's the link:

Steve, I had the address when it was live. It is a very tempting idea to put the camera in the water. I may do both, but I will wait until i get at least version one of the aqua scape in place before going down that road.

Peter,

Great looking tank, we are building a new custom home in Richmond Hill with a great walkout basement and I wanted to do a large aquarium down there. Reading over the past 93 pages of this thread has inspired me to go over to the top large. Although I may not have the sapce that you have with only a 2000sq foot basement I think I can make something work. Thanks for all your posts and information I will be keeping a close eye on this project for sure!

Peter. Thank you so much for your kind words.
If any part or picture of my build thread can be useful to our reefers, I am pleased to share it in any book or forum.

For TOTM, well, I already got that honor.
That should be enough.
There are still lots of beautiful tanks waiting to be nominated.
Let' see who's gonna be next.:wavehand:

Thanks very much Devin, you are not only a welcome addition to our community but clearly the object of the third chapter in the next book called "Wilson's common sense guide to the salt water marine aquarium".

By the way you cannot leave too much room for the fish room. Better still do what chingchai did and make it part of you display. If you haven't read his build yet, I highly recommend it. It is a blueprint for best practices for the serious aquariest.

Again welcome aboard!

Chingchai, your current build is a huge generational jump over your previous masterpiece. It is very deserving of recognition by and for our Reef Central community. You are way to humble my friend.

By the way I am still waiting for the full resolution digital pic so that I can print it. I need the full file which should be about 5 to 7 megs in jpeg format. The link in your thread shrinks the file size substantially. Let me know if you need more info.........

An aside

An aside

I'm thinking very seriously about attending the MACNA in Orlando in Sept. Is this event appropriate for the hobbyist or is it geared more to the suppliers?

All opinions are welcome and appreciated.

yup no problem, there is no rush.

By the way, that second fish room really is awesome, that is what i was thinking when you initially posted pics of your other fish room. Looks like you have lots of space now and nice work with the electrical panels. What i see there is one word.... NEMA4X

nice job!

I think its for both parties. I would love to go down for this conference. I will try and convince my wife we should go. I have some other local aquarists that are interested in attending.

MACNA is a great event to attend as a hobbyist. There is much to hear and learn during the speaker talks. There is opportunity to talk and interact with industry professionals and experts. The trade floor show is also very interesting and provides access to many manufacturers and distributors. MACNA is also an excellent avenue to meet fellow hobbyists.

We have attended the last five MACNAs and have no regrets. We attended our first one on a lark and then got hooked. Hope I don`t sound too much like a cheerleader; this show is highly recommended.

My only caution if your main interest is fish is that some years, the MACNA talks gear more towards reef keeping and less on fish husbandry.

I'm sure there is something I'm missing here, what does NEMA4X stand for?

Thank you Hesham, I'm pretty sure I will attend, it certainly sounds worthwhile. I think the emphasis on reef keeping is a good focus for me. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Peter,

I am in the process of spending hours reading though tank build pages to get ideas. One of my largest faults is to over plan everything, the house is due to be completed July 2011 (not sure if we will hit this date as we are having some issues with the city as our lot backs onto conversation land) however I am thinking I should have the tank put into the basement of the house before the house goes up. This maybe be easier then lifting it over the house to get it into the two french doors in the basement.

But the scale of your build is very inspiring!

I will send to you this week. Promise.
