if your a wholesaler or a LFS that needs to get there systems up quick, then ammonia will be a good method .Otherwise do it naturally

I believe adding a cup of sand or two from and existing bed will seed a new sand bed in a matter of days:)

every couple of years ill add a cup of sand from an established sytem to my sand,or add a fresh uncured rock to establish new bacterias.
im now going to try adding the echoback pellets.

this reminds me when i first started out, before the internet.

i tried the chemical bacteria in a jar,i found that fish were never healthy and died.tried again but with damsels to cycle tank,it worked but when i added a yellow tang its fins turned red which was not a good sign.
then as i was reading the sunday sun classifieds there was an article for marinefish.
i went to thornhill,i then met jack he had a setup in his basement with fish forsale.i mentioned my problem,i gave him my fish that were struggling do to cycling, went to dominion bought a lobster unplugged the heater and added the lobster, 6 weeks later my tank had cycled with no algae problems.
added fish . ever since then ive been addicted.

i prefer your method but i use a lobster,if afraid of lobster destroying the rockwork and digging around in the sand bed,i put it in the sump and feed it fresh shrimp daily, i find it works much faster than adding fish.

I have never heard of this, but sounds good and after the cycle dinner plans are already made? lol I think if I were to do it I would put one in the sump like you stated to avoid a lobster doing a godzilla on the rockwork.

Hmmm....

Just picked up some nice Air Force Ones thanks to Angle333's wonderful links he provided I even got them at wholesale!

Turning The Corner

It has been a considerable journey for those folks who have been with us from the beginning and for those joining us who have taken the time to read the entire thread from the start.

I thank each and every one of you and trust that the direction this thread now takes, honours your loyalty and participation. There's been a lot happening here over the last two weeks and I would like to share some of this with you now.

There have been a number of occasions when input or suggestions from this community had to be sidelined because of decisions already made or inadequate preparation on my part. There may have been other reasons but for the moment I will lay claim to the full responsibility for any shortfalls.

After the 'Flood' as many of you know I decided it was time to take a step back, take a deep breath and call for a summit on changes required in the project. One of the first steps I took was to review the makeup of the project team. I have been very happy with the involvement and commitment of the DQI resources, especially John who stepped up way beyond his job description to not only participate in the day to day issues surrounding the build but took a significant amount of time and energy to research and get up to speed on the challenges we were facing. He was invited to the summit. The maintenance team dubbed, The Brothers Grimm have been incredible. They have adapted to the project and it's demands with very high standards demonstrated on every aspect of their involvement. I think I lucked in to find them and I see them as long term members of this team. They were invited to the summit. In our first preliminary discussions one name kept surfacing that the team felt would enhance the next phase of development which was Bringing Life To The Tank, and that name was Mr. Wilson. I was nominated to approach him and formally ask him to join the team as the team leader. I invited him to the site and he had a chance to see everything warts and all. I asked him if he would consider joining the team and he agreed. I was very pleased that it really was a group decision and as some of you may recall when I asked the thread for input the response was very positive and supportive.

One of the first decisions the team agreed to was a complete review of the whole project from the beginning and a painstaking survey of the issues raised in this thread to see if there were items we should be looking at as we moved forward. There were a number of items we identified that should be addressed and they were put into the project hopper. Mr. Wilson agreed to attempt to capture as many of the items on the critical path to success and bring them back to the forum for review and comment. This doesn't mean that we want to have a complete and fresh debate on the issues already discussed earlier in the thread as much as respectfully demonstrate the best way we can that we have been listening to your advice and counsel in the pursuit of best practices. Everything short of replacing the display tank was on the table and as you will see I think we took virtually everything into account that came out of this thread.

Mr. Wilson has brought a great deal of positive energy to the project. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting him, he is, 'in the flesh' so to speak as positive and helpful as he has been on the thread. He is without a doubt, a gentleman's gentleman. I feel that the project has been enhanced a thousandfold by his presence and my goal of identifying and establishing a number of best practices for this hobby will be ensured. We have had a couple of 'bonding' sessions and the team couldn't be stronger or better positioned for the fun yet to come.

And on the subject of 'Team' we have all agreed that a critical seat round this table will include the forum. You folks have been amazing in the creation of the positive culture and support for this endeavor. This community will continue to play a dominant role in helping us to stay the course in reaching our objectives for this marine ecosystem with best practices in mind.

Some of the high level changes that you will see..............

A larger, expanded, better equipped fish room that will lend itself to the demonstration of best practices in the care and maintenance of our aquarium. We hope eventually to use the members of our thread to help identify some special research projects that a volunteer community like this can identify for the good of the hobby.

The whole issue of water flow and management has been taken back to the drawing board and Mr. Wilson will be the lead in walking us through some of the proposed changes. Hopefully as you will see we have taken this subject very seriously and tried to address many of the concerns brought out earlier in this thread.

Lighting will be a significant activity on this build as we look at the various suggestions made earlier in the thread and in fact we hope to contribute something very constructive to the opportunity to actually conduct some research with the design of this tank lending itself to a number of alternatives being compared using the same foundation.

One item introduced earlier in this thread will be revisited with I believe some great discussion on the merits of mangrove forests on our hobby. I won't steal Mr. Wilson's thunder on this topic but it certainly has me excited to see some elements of this come to fruition.

We have moved our one ton of Jakarta premium Branch live rock from its temporary location in the garage to the back yard where it will be easier to arrange the aquascaping to the display tank. The Brothers Grimm did a phenomenal job of moving each and every rock without leaving any dry for more than 30 secs. It was a logistical and practical success. I have pictures that even include some of the critters that showed themselves to us during the move. If the Bros Grimm were in charge in the gulf..........I don't think I need say more!! These kids have helped keep this rock alive and vibrant for more than 10 weeks with no compromise in quality. I thank them and praise them for their efforts. They are not too bad with Bentleys either.

The equipment sled is also being revisited to ensure the long term viability of our continuing plan to emphasize best practices in the management of the water column. I continue to be unyielding in pursuit of the opening principles at the beginning of this thread. The fish room and associated infrastructure will be an equal partner with the display tank experience. Any visitor to this aquarium will come away with an appreciation for all the elements it takes to be successful in this hobby and that especially includes the fish room. So manufacturers take note. You're stuff will be on display, warts and all. Not only are we going to hammer away on best practices but it has to look good as well.

I am also staying with the priorities I set out in the beginning of the thread and that is that the context of the display environment will be to demonstrate four different styles of aquascape and to honour for of the best aquarists who demonstrate those styles today. I have chosen the four styles and I have, I think, two of the four aquarists so far. More on this later.

I have not covered all of the changes and improvements here but they will be coming to you in the next short while. I have asked Mr Wilson to share his expanding vision on many of the subjects related to the continuing evolution of this build and I expect you will hear from him very, very soon.

Thank you all for your support and incredible patience during this lull in activity. I would suggest however that most of you should be reaching for his or her seatbelt for the remainder of the ride.

I love it when we speak of life before the internet as if we were reaching back into the 1800's..........:hmm3:

Why the reluctance Vic, is it a preference for all things au natural or something more substantive?

Now, don't go taking this the wrong way, but ... um ... how big is it?

Dave.M

I knew someone would ask that. It is about an inch long. I have a picture with a pen for reference but i'm using my iPad at the moment so I'll post the reference shot when I'm back at my laptop.
