coralline algae

has any one ever heard of this powder that makes coralline algae grow faster. the powder is allmost purple in colour. It's not much to go on but i think it say's something like black powder on the bottle.

Coraline algae recipe:

Light, flow, low phosphate, ca, alk, mg.

Any thing else is a waste of $$$ IMHO...

But you must have coralline present somewhere in the tank to
begin with for it to spread. And I agree with the above, All the
supplements are a waste of money. IMO

try to find a rock covered in coraline @ your lfs & throw it in your tank...

There are different types of coralline algaes... some require very low lighting, the important thing is to have some already introduced into the system... once you have that... it should grow everywhere!

thats the problem i already have coralline algae it just seems after a while it goes white

I find in newer tanks < 1yr old, corraline comes and dies off quick all of sudden. As the tank matures, and stabilizes it tends to stick around longer and longer. So, I realize I left one ingredient off my list - time...... Also, as far as "you must have some corraline" goes, that's true, but if you buy a single coral, there is probably more than enough corraline on the base rock it's attached to to get it started. I find especially in younger tanks, corraline tends to grow better in the darker shaded areas, and in general tends to like lower light, however, some corraline will certainly adapt to more intense lighting.

I am going to join in here and say that for months I have had slow coralline growth. It was there but very patchy. My tank is only 10-11 months old and has had halides over it now for about 4 months. Recently I began dripping Kalk at night and my pink coralline is accelerating rapidly. So much so that if I see a pin head of pink growing, within 2-3 days it is the size of a dime. Prior to kalk I was using B-ionic 2 part solution and kept my calcium at 460.

Stability is key to good Coralline growth. Keeping your levels of Cal, Alk and Mag in line help the Coralline grow. If you keep these levels in check you'll be cussing in no time at all after having to scrape all the time

Is the coralline that is white on glass, rock or plastic/acrylic? It seems that coralline grows much better on plastic/acrylic than on glass.

when I began using Reefcrystals a while back the coraline took off! now I am scraping the glass all the time haha! I have quite a few colors too; pink, purple and my favorite dark red. Better than any powders or chems, have a friend give you some scrapings, that will seed your tank quite nice.
