I'm curious myself. I had it growing fast in my tank. But cleaned my filters with vinegar and didn't wash it out very well. Long story short killed off some coralline growth. Didn't hurt fish or corals, they are still thriving. Just want it to grow back again. (Tank is 6 months old) at about 2 months I had it growing on my hob filters And powerheads.
In my short experience, this algae will rebound in about a month, depending on water quality. Having said that, I have only been able to grow only green coralline. For some reason, the purple one is present but in very small quantity.
Red sea makes a tank starter kit that helped aid in some coraline growth ....also purple up sometimes helps but you need some coralline in the tank to seed it otherwise your gonna wait forever to see any. . .
Ok this went off track a little. I grow coralline like mad in my display and frag tank for years. As most know I setup a 10 gal to try and raise my clown fish fry. It has a single 3 watt led light and a sponge filter. That tank is growing coralline nicley. I thought that was odd.
I used to get purple coralline in my skimmer body from light reflecting off a cfl bulb fixture 3 feet away. I don't think there is much of a light requirement for coralline. It does seem grow very think under heavy lighting.
I think most green coralline will eventually turn purple or pink. My last tank had all green then all turned into purple coralline. Same thing with my current nano tank, it all started out green and is now turning into purple. I also just recently realized it requires light, I never knew it was so light dependent but, my small tank is covered in it meanwhile my dark ages 75g without a light has nothing. I know you can use purple up but I think just as long as your CA and MAG are where they need to be you should see good growth of it.
