coris wrasse project UPDATE!

hey everyone, some of you may be following the coris wrasse challenge ive gotten myself into. well, to sum it all up im happy with the progress so far. both of them are getting more bold and starting to accept my food regimen. im feeling good about there survival rates and have never been so excited about my tank before. ive always shyed away from the coris due to their horrible survival rates but i had to try once. granted were only three weeks in so im not even close to being a success story but, these fish are eating like tanks on a ultra-varied diet. i snapped a few pics. as always they are of horrible quality due to my horrible skills/equipment but they give you a general idea. without further adue here they are.

Great looking fish Steve.

I was wondering if that is a fish only tank? And does the Seagrass Wrasse mess with anything? I almost bought one, but I have ended up with a six line. I was a little hesitant to put one in my 90 with all the corals.

I would like to come over and take a look sometime.

robert, its quite the opposite, and very much a reef. none of my wrasses have ever bothered anything coralwise. ive never even seen them go after a snail/crab either. in my opinion most internet websites are horriby wrong with their "reef safe" ratings. if its found on a reef in the wild its welcome in my tank. most reef safe fish just hover around the water column and are dull to me. the "unsafe" fish make it interesting to me because i can see their natural behaviors/hunting. if that means they pick off a snail or crab every once in awhile so be it, its entertaining to watch, part of nature, and costs me 1.00 to replace what it just ate. i guess it just depends how bold you are but in 2 years of keeping large wrasses in reefs ive NEVER had one issue. p.s- i have never had a problem with zoa eating nudis, monti nudis, or any flatworms for that matter. these fish decimate anything small enough to fit in their mouths. they wont attack coral flesh though.

The nudi's is the exact reason I was looking for one. But I found the Seagrass and like the look of the fish too.

Wonder if they will get along with the rest of my crew?

2 - regal tangs
1 - swallowtail angel
5 - chromis
3 - false perc clowns
1 - golden headed sleeper goby
1 - six line wrasse

I got a cleaner shrimp and a coral banded shrimp too. ?

robert, i have a similar fish list as well and havent had a problem. my only concern would be if the 6 line has been there for awhile he may try to beat up any new acquisitions. ive never had a prob with shrimp though. just a friendly reminder though, youre mileage may vary if youre up for a little excitement, id recommend going for it. lifes too short to play it safe ALL the time <~~~steve

Six line only been in there for about 3-4 weeks, and is only about 2 inches. I think I might try it. where did you buy yours at?

Six lines are PITA's... I'd watch it like a hawk. I had one about 9 years ago. It was picking on my mandarin (had him down to skin and bones), so out it came-the mandarin made a complete recovery. Dave's tank of 46 wrasses or whatever he had was incredible to me... I love wrases, just providing enough food for a buunch o fthem in one tank seems daunting (I'm not much on feeding my fish-they should have plenty to eat in the tank-and are all fat and happy, despite trying to make me feel like thye are starving, though I'd alter this for some of my fav wrasses).

The longer I am with the hobby (lifestyle), the more I find myself really liking the wrasse, all of them. I see a different one every time I hit the internet to research. Don't get me wrong I like my tangs too, but someone better buy that 20 gallon before I set it up again......:eek1:

Is that seagrass wrasse the same as the one I saw at aquatic critter this weekend? They were calling it a green coris wrass. It looked very similar. I almost bought it.

i have seen them at the AC labeled as green coris wrasses before as most are grouped under that common name just due to the color. the seagrass is differientiated by black striations around the eyes and a much more slender body instead of the typical "fat bullet" style body that green coris' have. a true green coris is very rare to obtain due to their environment but seagrasse wrasses arent. the seagrass live in seagrass beds at shallow depths (ironic huh?) which makes for an easy catch and low price. i paid about 20 bucks for mine. dont be alarmed if when you add this fish it hides for a few days to a week....its not dead just shy. itll come around slowly but surely. out of fairness to the animal try to pile up about 5 inches of sand in a corner atleast for it to bury, that makes it feel ten times more comfortable. p.s- gary, i think daves cube had a total of 51 or 52 iirc. ill try to find old pics and post em up. it was unbelievable in real life for those that didnt have the chance to see it before the breakage.

heres daves pictures, i hope he doesnt mind me using them....... for anyone thats never been to kermits reef in memphis, this tank will show you why everyone raves about his livestock. everything he has in this tank is the same quality as what he has for sale. anyways, the pics dont show the flurry of wrasses he had. almost everything in the tank was rare, colorful, and very PRICY. it was a rare fish lovers dream. on with the pics......

chris! great to hear from you! we'll be down soon enough, i hope youre schedule permits a few woodchucks when were down there gimme a call sometime, id love to hear how the tank is doin.<~~~steve

I remember when that tank went up (or better yet, when they hex in the middle of the floor came down). That was an incredible tank (speaking more of the main display, but the hex was nice, too). if ever in the Cordova area, I definitely recommned Kermit's. I don't go to Memphis without going by to harass Dave and crew. The back of the store is more fun than the front (because the stuff back there isn't usually for sale and there seems to be more back there getting robust enough to sell than out front).

That was the main display at Kermit's Reef in Memphis before it cracked... Amazing site to see with all of the wrasses.

if you couldve seen it........ if you love wrasses like i love wrasses it was a life changing event the first time i saw it. it didnt look like a tank, it looked like an episode of blue planet. the most natural system i ever saw. dave is the bigest wrasse lover ive ever met. he can look at two identical wrasses and explain why one came from halfway across the world from the other just due to subtle striations in the body color. he's a fish genius.<~~~~steve

Steve, my tank had a few ( lots) of prob's recently. Multiple things all at once, lost about 60% of the sps. Every monti ( nudi's ) all the milli's ( I suspect worms) then had an alk and ca prob that I just fixed. The one's that survived look more robust than when I got them. Lost the Royal flasher ( unknown ) just one morning poof. Picked up a lubbocks to replace him. Added a chalk bass with lots of blue. Got a Tono's Fairy wrasse. But on the good side the Randall's goby & Randall's shrimp moved up to the front of the tank and I see them all the time now.

that blows, im weaning myself from my sps addiction currently as well. im focusing on lps and a few select softies. im planning a bigger than i should have bioload with alot of wrasses and the euroreef can only do so much. i need some corals that can deal with "dirtier" water. ill see ya soon!<~~~steve
