Could A refugium take a large gph flow?

Hi. I am in the planning/contructing stages of a 120g full reef. I will be adding a 50g breeder as a sump/refugium.
This is actually the first time I will be using a refugium and was wondering if they could handle a large flow or should it be kept to a minimum? If so, what is the most gph I should/could use?

I have a very similar setup; 120 gallon reef with 50 gallon sump/refugium. I run two Mag-Drive 1200's as return lines. I estimate about 2,000 gph runs through the sump/refugium. With the right baffle setup, bubble production is not a problem.
