Cpllongjk's Red Sea Reefer 170

Update.

Added a Frag tank tonight made by Advanced Acrylics. It is lit by a ATI Sunpower 6x24w fixture with 4 Giesemann Tropic bulbs and 2 ATI Actinic bulbs. My goal with the frag tank is maximum growth. Once I am ready to frag, I will cut and transfer the cutlets to a plug on a rack in my display to color them up. I may play with the t5 bulb combo if I can find another combo that will give better color and the same growth. For flow I am using a single Maxspect Gyre 150. Going with the 150 made the most sense because it already supported 3/4" acrylic and the 130 didn't. For now it's running at 40-50% until I tune the outputs so they don't slosh water over the edge.

Dimensions are 30x20x8" with External overflow and (2) 3/4" drains for herbie setup and (1) 1/2" return.

Added a Vortech M1 because the Eheim 1260 wasn't enough flow for both tanks. I currently use the pump on 50% and could go higher but don't really need to and I love how silent things are. I also wanted the M1 for battery backup purposes. I am adding a backup battery next week. I had the power go out for 2 hours a few weeks ago and it scared me. It was literally a few days after I got my coral frags.

I also ordered another backup battery for the mp10s. 1 battery should power both mp10s for 36 hours. In California I have never had my power out for more than 24 hours so I am hoping 1 battery for the mp10s is all that is needed.

Hey buddy. The new frag tank looks great.

How is that Deltec 1351 working for you? I bought one a week ago and having a crazy time getting it dialed in. It either overflow or doesnt skim. If I feed the tank the foam just collapses and the skimmer starts to rock a little due to the turbulence. Does yours lose the foam right after feeding? On my last skimmer the foam used to reduce slightly but with this skimmer it completely collapses and it take 3 or more hours to regain. :mad2:

I'd love to know what power level you have it set on? How long did it take to break in? How deep in the water is it? And if you could take a photo of the Adjustment tube side as well as having the skimmer cup after its been skimming a few days would be great. Thanks.

I've almost finished work on the Giessemann light and have converted it to MH/T5/LED :D

I run a 1351. It's in 8 inches of water. Have the power set on 5/8.

The foam does collapse when feeding oily foods like cyclopeeze or plankton foods and takes 1-2 hours to skim again. But with just NLS pellets for fish it's fine. Maybe reduces slightly. It did take about a day to re-foam after dosing Kent tech m too, oddly enough.

Initial break-in was hard for me as I didn't know what power/levels to aim for and there wasn't much info out on the web. So hope this helps! It didn't take long to skim though!

I mark the water level I get best skimming with on the tube and then adjust to get it there (in case I knock it during maintenance).

The Deltec is working great. I keep it at 5/8 and the outlet pipe is almost completely open. It sets in about 8" of water. When I change out filter socks I ramp it down to 3/8 or 4/8 for 20 minutes otherwise it will overflow. I haven't noticed the skimmer stopping after feeding at all. But I make my own frozen food and the pellets I use have never stopped any of my skimmers.

Try reducing the power to 4/8 or so. One thing I noticed was that if I ever go to 6/8 I cannot adjust water level with outlet pipe. It took about a month to completely break in. I was getting skim in 3 days but to completely level off and perform it took 21 days to 1 month. Give it time and you'll be so happy.

My skimmer is acting funny right now but I expected it to because I just added a 20g frag tank the other day. It'll probably act out of wack for a few weeks until the other tank settles in.

I'm really looking forward to your DIY on the Giesemann and would love to see progress pictures if you can post some on the lighting forums.

On another note almost all the algae is gone in my tank. I started running GFO in a reactor opposed to in a sock passively. One bad thing though is the corals look really mad and seemed to have lost some color. I cannot wait until the algae is gone then I can try and raise nutrients a bit to color everything back up.

I will get the DSLR setup and take some higher quality photos tonight. I really need to get a macro lens. I have a nikon camera do you use nikon if so what lens should I get?

I agree with Bubble. Since there aren't a lot of people in the US with these skimmers there doesn't seem to be much online support. As I said above I have mine in the same water depth and run it at the same level on the pump 5/8. Watch out for filter sock changes and oily foods. I usually put the skimmer in "feed" mode for 10 minutes when I change out the sock. The initial changing of the sock makes the skimmer go nuts.

Beautiful tank! What is your current stock list? And how aggressive are the chromis to eachother?

Thanks, currently I have 1 helfrichi firefish, 1 tailspot blenny, 3 chromis, 4 scarlet hermits, 4-6 turbo snails, roughly 10 astrae snails, and 1 fighting conches.

I am pretty happy with the current stock list. I would like to add a hawaiian wrasse but I need to find a healthy one in stock somewhere.

The chromis arent that aggressive however, I've gone though a bunch, lots died. I want to say I've bough at least 10 and only 3 have survived. I've also lost a mystery wrasse, and a yellow tang. The fish looked good at the store, I checked for spots or disease and within a few days after getting them home they developed or already had signs of stress or disease.

Normally, I only add one fish at a time with the exception of the chromis. At one time I added 7 small chromis only to have 1 survive. All fish were drip acclimated for at least an hour and my water parameters are always super stable, no swings in anything.

Nice work. Coral should start to colour up pretty soon.

They're starting to but just not fully yet. I'm not really messing with things yet because they're growing at a decent rate and I would rather have faster growth rates over color right now. Once the tank reaches a year or more I will start adjusting for color slightly.
