would one of these cpr bak pak 2's be good on my 55? and should i trade my fluval 304 for it? someone offered that to me...right now i've only got 30 lbs of lace rock, but i'm planning on getting at least 30 lbs of live rock soon. It says that its rated for 60 gallons, but i know a lot of people try to get skimmers that are at least 20 gallons more than their tank.

My tank isnt a reef right now, but in the future i plan on having some gsp's and maybe other stuff like it...nothin big.

and as far as fish, i'm only planning on having like, 6 green chromis and a flame angel, and maybe a hawk...thats not that much of a biolode is it? Im also planning on getting a ton of snails and hermits and whatnot...

lemme know what you think! or tell me a better skimmer that i could get for cheap thats good for a 55, or if you wanna trade a decent skimmer for a perfect fluval 304, lemme know.

thanks

lol thats great news! how much live rock and stuff did you have? and it was the bak pak 2 right?

oh, and do skimmers provide flow? do they have a return part or something like a canister? cuz if i do that, then i'll lose 260 gallons per hour, unless this thing has flow. And just to make sure...it is a hang on right?
thanks

take the deal

take the deal

I've been running one for over a year as my only skimmer, it works well enough to keep coral. The fluval is kind of useless for a reef tank, I bought a 404, that will only get used when clearing the water when setting up new tanks.

the skimmer will not really provide much flow. all the powerheads gph are used to make bubbles and turbulance inside the skimmer.

i have a bakpak2r on my 35g, and it works quite well. but if you load that 55g with fish, it may become overwhelmed. maybe the mj1200 mod would help then.

I also have a bakpak on a 55g or I should say had. It isn't running at the moment because the pump broke. I have a new GenX needlewheel pump coming for it. I hope that will do the job. I may mod it and add an air pump and wooden diffuser for more bubbles. My tank has soft, LPS and SPS corals. It also has six nano fish (3 firefish, 1 royal gramma, 1 ocelleris clown and a 6-line wrasse). I run a 20g sump with a hang-on refugium in the sump.

An inexpensive alternative would be the Coralife 65 needlewheel for <$90.

quote- "it works quite well. but if you load that 55g with fish, it may become overwhelmed"

would the 6 or 7 chromis and the flame angel be considered "loading" the tank? and there would be at least 30 lbs of live rock, and 30 lbs of lace rock, and in the far (somewhat) future there would be gsp's. and the only reason i really wanted the fluval was for flow...nothing in it.

6-7 chromis a flame angel wouldnt be overloading a 55g IMO. the majijet 1200 mod is very cheap and effective if you wanted to do it.

how does that work? the mod i mean. and i'm guessing i should get another powerhead to replace the flow of my fluval? i've only got 2 aquaclear...301's i believe...anyways, they're 175 gph each.

thanks all

you take the rio off the bakpak, and put a maxijet1200 on it instead.

i would order 2 majijet1200s while you are at it. run the other one for flow

mine has been running for 3 years now and replaced the rio pump once....you have to keep up on cleaning out the tubes where it sucks in air...other than that iv been happy

ok sounds great. And the guy i'm guetting it from said that he'll be takin it off his tank in about a month. Should i try to get the skimmer first, before i send my fluval, just to make sure that i got some kinda filtration on htere? or would it be fine for about a a week w/out any filtration?

thanks

I agree, you need a couple of powerheads. I have two MJ1200s and one MJ900 along with my Mag7 return on my 55g. My GenX needle wheel pump will be here on Mon. I hope that wakes up my BakPak.

ya, i was planning on getting a couple more powerheads soon anyways. and are there only a few powerheads that fit the bak pak? if so, whats the best one?

Please update when you have run the new pump for a week, let us know how it does. :)

I will mark this thread so I am sure to see your reply. Very interested.

thx,

Sales Weasel:

Hey, I see you are also running the bakpak IN-SUMP, is that correct?

I figured this would be ok, nice to see it's already been done:)

change of plans...got offered an aqua c remora for a price i cant pass by...so should i get this? i dont wanna say the price but i'll just say its less than you can get the css 65 from liveaquaria or whatever that site is thats w/them. think its a good buy? its got the mj1200 w/it...is that the stock pump it comes w/or no? i'd also like some feedback from people who have this skimmer.

thanks

cant really say if its a good deal or not without the price/condition of the skimmer. i run a mag 7 on my remora pro and it does a great job. i would get the remora ( assuming its a good deal) and upgrade the pump to a mag 5 or 7. mj1200 does an ok job, but its not even in the same ballpark as the mag 7.
