Sorry no picture till I get new batteries for the camera but ...

Small crab about 1 inch in a snail shell, variable green body, white banding around the leg joints, orange antennae and turquoise/electric blue mouth area.

Was one of two crabs that I got in the 40 gallon tank deal, the other crab looks like a red hermit of some description but he's hiding currently.

Thanks in advance

Thanks both, looked on google but it didn't look quite right. I'll bow to your knowledge and hopefully will have a picture of it tomorrow.

edited for more info

Looks nothing like the emerald's google is showing. This is wandering around with it's shell on it's back and looks like some form of hermit although google isn't giving me any green hermits to compare with. I'll grab new batteries and get pictures up asap.

Oh duh, I feel like a tool. I completely overlooked the fact that he said it was in a shell. How about a blue legged hermit crab...

Definitely not an emerald based on the shell and the orange antenna...might be a Halloween hermit crab or a scarlet reef hermit. Try googling either of those and see if they bare a resemblance.

+2 for missing as well...green body? in a shell? have no idea.

Haha I saw you two say Emerald crab which totally threw me off. I was second guessing myself, " Wait... if they both said emerald crab... what is the REAL name of that thing in my tank!!!"

it was past midnight...i have no promises on my worthiness of comments past midnight...so sorry i threw you off....

Thanks for the help all, Mel's id comes very close.

Now I'm a little more awake the leg bands are more of an ivory than true white. I'll pop a picture up as soon as I grab some batteries for the camera.

Now with images, forgive the quality it's the first attempt with this camera at macro type shooting, the white balance may also be off a little too.

We snagged the complete 40 Gallon tank off CL, it had been left to run pretty much "as is" and we did a total transfer last night. The tank is back up and running and nobody appears to be any the worse for wear from their ordeal. This weekend the plan is to clean as much of the hair algae off the rocks as we can. There are some "unknown" as yet corals that we'll try to id and save, definitely a couple of button types.

Right now it has a twin bulb fixture but either a 4 bulb T5 or LED system will get ordered this weekend along with some more powerheads and a wavemaker.

Thanks again for the pointers, I'm sure there will be a million more questions to come

giant claw usually spells trouble and it might not be reef safe in terms of picking on corals, eating inverts, etc.

Kat,

He'd love to come stay in an aggressive tank. Right now he's not really causing trouble that I can see but he does like to climb up on the finger leathers which makes them kinda sad. I'll drop you a pm later in the week or next weekend to sort something out. I'm trying to let the tank settle for a few days before I get in there and start to arrange rocks.

Stu

i have a nice aggressive tank that he might like to call home if you have problems.

He's a cool looking little dude. Sometimes it doesn't always have to go bad..hope he works out for you, but he's got a home if it doesn't. ;)
