Side note: Fish Dave, if you don't at least make an attempt to breed this fish it will be a terrible waste... and I'm not generally a big fan of marroons.

It looks a little young, doesn't it? I wonder two things, 1) how the barring will keep as it gets older, and 2) if it is breed will it produce any offspring with that type of barring.

1) I'm not as familiar with maroons clowns, but many clownfish have different barring from juvi's to adults. Though usually it's the entire bar, but sometimes they gain or loose some white. I wonder if the little holes will fill in, or remain.

2) IF the bars maintain, what is the likelihood for them to be passed down? Is this a true genetic anomaly that is irreproducible, or a color variation or strain that could be line breed?

Assuming that this picture is real (which at this point I'm going to assume) it will be interesting to see how this fish matures.

That seems pretty steep for a fish that doesn't have any "track record" of it's coloration. It would be tragically ironic for the fish to mature into just another GSM. I guess that's the risk the purchaser took - one that may pay off IF it keeps it's stripes, and IF it is able to pass the coloration gene down.

I think of the stripes in this case kind of like human skin pigmentation.* Someone with dark skinned parents may also end up with dark skin. A child of one dark and one light may end up anywhere in the spectrum. Now, if a parent has vitiligo, (analogous to the stripes on this fish), though it is genetic it is so rare that you could have generations before another child has it. Time will tell.

*NOTE dark and light are in absolutely no reference to any race or culture or ethnicity - there are variations within all and is in no way meant to have any racial connotation.

Here is a little more info. This is not a GSM or Gold stripe maroon, it is the regular white bar type. It is larger than it looks in the picture at around 2 inches. It is of adult size and my guess is that will turn out to either be a female or soon will be female. This is the second one found with this type of pattern, both came from the same general area. I don't think that it sold for 2,500.00. It is going to a well known breeder who will be doing his best to bring out the abnormal bar pattern.

It's an amazing fish +1 to all of those posts!
I wonder if it's genetic or some kind of deficiency. The lower body bar section appears to be a different color than the rest of the bar and looks "patchy".

I LIKE it a lot. I'd definitely pick a pair up if they were decently priced (ie. $300-$400 a pair)

Where did you read it sold for $5,000?Im pretty sure it sold for less than $2,500.Read the story on BZ.The fish went to Matt P.Also the price for a spawning pair of SF/Picasso isnt no more than $1,200 if not less.More comonly sold for $750 or less!
