CT 265 Build

I was quite fortunate to get it. Been looking for a really colorful morph for a while. Had a purple based mag with cream tentacles some years ago that was really nice, but this one is the most colorful I have ever seen in person.

History on this one is fascinating. It's a split from an original that's been the subject of threads here on RC going back as far as 2008, if memory serves. Apparently it is one that splits, versus others I've had that don't appear to readily. Perhaps I'll have 'frags' available at some point :)

Lighting Upgrade

Lighting Upgrade

Never content with the status quo (this is a hobby, after all) I have reworked the lighting on my tank. While I like the reefbreeders LED, I saw a pair of Kessils over a friends tank and really liked them. So, I have decided to add three to my current setup. I will keep the RB because as a point source, the Kessil can have shading problems; but I think the MH may ultimately go. I'm going to reduce the MH photoperiod by a couple of hours and see.

EoY Update (Well, Almost)

EoY Update (Well, Almost)

Not all that much has changed:

  1. Had a bit of SPS die off, reasons unknown as water parameters all appear fine. Am thinking I might do one of those Triton tests. Maybe the adamantium levels are high? Pulled and fragged the colonies that were dying and problem appears solved.
  2. Lost my sailfin tang for no apparent reason. He was swimming and eating at 10 am; dead on the sand with no apparent injuries by noon. Very strange.
  3. I really like my new Kessil lights - not sure they don't work better in conjunction with my reefbreeders (point source versus line source) but the halides may go.
  4. Tired of wrestling with my calcium reactor, so I have one of those sued masterflex pumps coming.
  5. Thinking about switching my second overflow from durso/return to siphon/return.

That's about it - HH!

Things are looking good really envy that nem as my tanks just too small for one. Sucks about the losses but seems to happen once in a while, hope the rest remain super healthy. Have a good holiday season.

Kessil Lights

Kessil Lights

I have been changing over the lights on my tank, and while it would be premature to draw any growth conclusions, I do like the look a lot! Previously, I had been running two ReefBreeders Photon 32 synched units as the main lighting supplemented 4 hours per day with dual 14K 150 watt HQI. I have now discontinued using the metal halides, and have been gradually shifting emphasis away from the RB fixtures and to the Kessils. I quite like the combination of the Kessils as point source lights and the RB as line source lights, so will run both long-term, but I am reducing the peak output on the latter from 90% to about 50% (not fully there yet though) while bringing the Kessils up to about 90%.

These first three pictures are with both the RB and Kessils running; the next picture is just with the Kessils running. AS other folks have noted, shimmer with the Kessils is really good, though not particularly apparent in these photos unfortunately. You will either just have to take my word for it or come and see the tank :)

Remaining pictures are of the lighting hood. I have the three Kessils controlled via my Apex which allows me to independently control intensity and color. Pretty slick!

Simon, I'm really digging the new Kessils!! The tank looks great! I need to stop by and see your mad scientist concoction again soon. I'm sure your setup has changed since I've seen it last, as it is in a constant state of flux.

Looks really good Simon ! Thanks for sharing...

One question, I noticed on the 4th pic with just the kessils running, it wasen't as blue as the others. Can you adjust the kessils to make it as blue as the other 3 ?

Thanks,
Keith

Love your tank! I have the same one and I plan on setting it up over the next few months. Any chance you could provide info on your setup such as sump size, plumbing pics etc? Any info would be great. I am still learning a lot so be gentle, LOL!!! My main goal is to have fish and some coral as time and funds permit.

It's a good point .... I just did that one picture to show what the Kessils looked like on their own. I have the color set to '80' on my Apex which is towards the white end. I could set them to be bluer but, frankly, my RB fixtures give me that so I'd rather get more intensity out of the Kessils.

Thanks Mason. Still having some STN issues on some of my SPS corals, not really sure why. You know you are always welcome to come by anytime. How's the little frag tank doing for you?

I think if you trawl though this thread you will see some of that. My sump is a standard 75 gallon tank that I was using for my prior 90 gallon display. It is quite functional, and catches all of the overflow water (which is most important), but I'd be lying if I didn't say I wished it was a bit bigger. My own rule of thumb is that the sump should be no smaller than 1/3 of the display, so a 90 (or even 120) would have been better. But, if there is one immutable rule of reefing it is that as soon as you setup any tank the flaws in the approach become immediately apparent. My plumbing is functional but an aesthetic train wreck (along with the wiring, bzzzzzzzt). I'm running a siphon/return from one of the overflows and a siphon/open channel from the other. Except for my vortech pumps, the display is dead quiet. I'm firmly in the moderate sump flow camp, so my main pump is a PanWorld 150 which I figure gives me a head net flow of about 750, so 3x tank volume per hour, give or take.

Some more shots with the new lights ....

Since the last set of photos, I have added a 160WE to the tank. I initially bought it for the frag tank, but its a bit too bright.
