CTARS Community Pico Reef Thread 1-8 gallons

You could do a MH at about 10' above the tank. Iam going to read in the nano fourm see what they are doing for lights.

I wanna do something around 3-4 gallons prob. Is there anything else for coral besides LEDs for our pico tanks?

For a Nano, you have all the standard options, but a true pico will leave you looking at LEDs. Kessel, AI Nano, or the Par 38 bulbs will be some of the top choices besides DIY.

It doesn't really count in the category of 1-8 gallons, but I have a little 150 ml square jar that I made into a tiny atto-cube two weeks ago. I have some aiptasia, a ball anemone, macroalgaes and a stalk of anthelia living in there. I've tried a polyp of xenia in there twice, but it keeps getting lost between the rocks.. might need to try a bigger piece later. I have no filtration on it and it just gets light from sitting on the windowsill. After 2 weeks it's still looking good.

Reminds me of a guy who made a pest tank, and asked for anyones pests and would even pay for shipping. All sorts of majano, aptasia, bugs, worms, and a mantis. Pretty neat!

Wonder if you can buy a 100 watt Mh setup or smaller:)

100w on a nano yes, but nothing smaller than 10g unless you had it pretty high up and then the spill would annoy you. I currently have my ai nano over my 7.5g at 38% light and it's growing the SPS just fine.

Oh and I have an innovative marine 8w skkye light in black if anyone is interested. Invidual controls for white and blue is a neat feature as well.

Like New- $40.00

I want to see it and it counts!

BRS now has the Maxspect 60W Nano R420R Razor LED Lighting Fixture. Check it out, and covers allot of the spectrum with many different diodes.

The lighting is a huge boon in the pico or nano arena. Here's hoping that they begin to develop versatile flow alternatives.

Here's my tiny tank when I first set it up a couple weeks ago.

Here it is yesterday, got some new algae in there and the aiptasia have moved around a bit. I added more xenia as of last night as well. Maybe I can try one of my green majanos in there sometime. One of my green ones split into three a few weeks ago, but my red tipped one hasn't done any growing at all yet. I wish that one would divide instead since it looks nicer. Someone suggested I add a micro brittle star to the tank at some point too.

I was planning to do a water change daily... but um... I kinda forgot about it on my windowsill and haven't changed any water since I set it up.

Looks like you lost a little water a half inch could be deadly but your doing good in that tank can I say wow should get a pod culture going in there

I think there's a couple pods already living in there, but I should catch some more at night and put them in.
I think the water level looks lower because I added a piece of xenia with some water and it rose a bit too high, so I syringed some out. The cap screws on pretty tightly so there's not a lot of evaporation going on.

Have you ever seen the glass balls with water plants and bugs inside they sell them at science places there a circle of life all you do is put it in sun light the plant grows adds food and air to the water the bugs feed the plant and trim the plant so it dosnt go crazy sorta reminds me of this jar

Yep the Ecosphere - last at least 7 years!

I think those things are marine, aren't they? I wanted to get one of those a while back.
