CTARS Community Pico Reef Thread 1-8 gallons

Getting ready to set up a pico! Very excited! Thinking of going with a 5g. What type of livestock would be possible in here? If i get a standard 5.5g do you think the AC30 hob filter with chaeto would be too much flow?

Ac30 will take care of all your flow for that tank. If you get a small enough heater you could prolly even hide it in the Aquaclear. Softies only to start there steph! You could prolly put one or two small gobies , but i wouldn't put too much in there. Also an ato OR a cover to reduce evaporation will go a long way.

@stepho, my tank I posted above has no filter and I've had no problems. All biological filter! I just have one little circulator pump.

The tank looks a lot different now. I have two yasha gobies, a tiny pygmy angel, two hawaiian zebra her bit crabs, and two bumble bee snails. Everything gets along well.

I've heard of a lot of people putting gobies and juvenile fish in their Pico tanks.

Karl - only softies in the tank even with decent lighting? I was wanting really to put my frag of Favia that isnt doing so well in my bc into the new tank....think thats a bad idea? Curious why? Also when you say softies only does that include zoas?

I was thinking of a shrimp & goby pair but my boyfriend is really wanting seahorses (obviously dwarf would have to do). Either way, it will likely be ready for livestock around mid-december but possibly as late as mid-january.
Deciding on whether to start with live rock or not which will help in being the deciding factor on when any livestock goes in.

I have dry sand and rock that just needs some washing. Have a pico light (thanks to masedaddy) and have the AC30 for refuge/flow/possibly heater (thanks for the idea karl). So really i just need a thermometer & a tank & teeny heater....possibly just grab an astrea snail or two from my current tank & maybe even a hermit & just leave the one scarlet in there. Although the snails are doing an awesome job keeping things clean. Maybe I will spring for two Nassarius, two small surface snails, & either a pompom crab or a dwarf hermit or two. Andddd how about a sexy shrimp & yasha goby? Do they have a relationship or is it only the other shrimp whose name i cant remember for some reason?

Okay we will see....although not lots of options still many to consider. Invert-only? Coral-only? Hmm not sure. Lots to consider.

All of this along with thoughts of upgrading our main tank for Christmas! Guess Im catching another case of reef fever!

I used all stuff off my main system so no cycle per say, on my 2.5g system and I do 90% water changes on it also from my main system weekly. I am using a deep blue 10 for my circulaition and mechanical filter and currently have a blue leg a couple snails and a antenna goby in there.

I recommend softies /lps/zoas to start because they tolerate swings must better then other corals. In a pico tank your swings (temp. , ph , alk, salinity ) will be much greater then what occurs in your 29 biocube. Keeping the swings to a minimum is key to success. This includes your livestock choices. Fish poop in 5 gallons of water will raise your po4/nitrates faster then in a larger tank. Just some things to think of. I would visit the nano reefs forum on reefcentral for research and comparison.

Maybe i will skip fish for this tank! Im excited to try it out but think I may allow it to cycle from new sw so i dont carry over those high nitrates i continue to battle in the bc. Definitely going to do some more research and see what i can come up with.

FINALLY got around to taking a couple of pics of my Nano. Please excuse how dirty it is, I've been totally caught up setting up a frag tank so I haven't given it all the attention it needs. Also ignore the tile in the back, I'm just testing it to make sure nothing leaches out and kills my things before I put it in the main system.

I have a yasha goby, candy cane pistol shrimp, 2 cerith snails, 1 pygmy angel, eagle eye zoas, kryptonite trumpets, no name palys, frog spawn, and an orange riccordia.....I think that's it.

Not sure where I will take this yet. Possibly will use it to support the main tank for frags. That said some part of me wants to make it an NPS or species tank. We'll see...

Sweet tank haha

Glad you found this thread Aleks. Get some ideas for the Spec :) We're going to be pretty limited on coral selection with the stock light, but I don't think we have anything better available yet.
Btw, thanks for the push!
Everyone's tanks look great! I think I'll have to find a light for my little acrylic cube now.

I need a new light for this little one too. Was thinking of just getting another Boost LED like the one over my office tank but I really don't want to spend $110 on a project tank that will rarely be seen by anyone.

Fluval Spec 3

Hello All,

I have a Fluval Spec 3 (2.6 gallon) about 14 months old right now that I would like to post a picture of. In fact, I have 4 pico tanks and 1, 14 gallon Bio-Cube. I cannot figure out how to insert the photo into this comment. The funny thing is, I work on a computer all damn day! Any help? This is the best i could do so far.. The Tank is c.11 months

You have to first post the pics to a service like Photobucket or Image shack and then attach the "img" address to the picture icon in the message composition box.

looks awesome! I run the same tank in my office. I found that I had to add a power head in order to keep stuff looking healthy. The flow provided by the stock pump wasn't enough.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info. I upgraded the pump from the 37gph to a 100gph. I used the stock pump for a power head in another of my pico's. I have 3 in my office. The largest of them is the Innovative Marine Nuvo 8.

That's interesting. Can you tell me about that 100gph pump? How did you install it? Did you need to mod the overflow and filter compartment or did it just fit? Where did you get it and about how much if you recall? I would love to get rid of the power head in mine. Thanks in advance!

Nice tanks, all! I really MUST get my 12g CADlights tank back up. I've just been so busy at work that I've had a tough time just getting it cleaned out after the crash. At least I finally got all of the sand and water out.

I've got some leftover dry Marco rock from my big tank build that I just put into my big tank refugium to populate. I'm also going to use some of the sand from the big tank - I have a little bit more than I want in there and this is a good time to grab some out. I'll need to get more flow and definitely hook up an ATO.

Practically every day someone harasses me for it being a stinky eyesore :(
