Ctenochaetus striatus bristletooth tang

do juveniles have a different appearance than the adults?
I've seen small C. striatus with pronounced blue banding at LFS's and in Kuiter's Surgeonfish book which lists it as Ctenochaetus striatus cf.
Does anybody here know more about this?

Yes, they are quite different in appearance as juvies; mine being sold to me about a decade ago as a 'Five Lined Tang' or some such. As I recall, it did have 5 or 6 horizontal lines running across its flanks but much like its close cousin C. hawaiiensis, it tends to dull out as it matures. Doesn't get quite as large though. The badly oversharpened shot below shows my striatus about 5 years ago and it is still with me...(man, I've really got to update my picture library )

Gary, this may or may not answer your question, but the "cf" is part of the nomenclature which menas "looks like". Thats what biologist and taxonomists put when they have an unidentified species, but they believe it is a color morph, or subspecies of a certain species.

thanks for your post Michael. I've had a striated bristletooth for over two years now but it was already an adult when I purchased it.
Even though this species can "flash" different colors it has a distinctive shape

does anyone have a picture of the juvenile "5 lined bristletooth"?
or C. striatus cf.?

Supposedly this species is much more commonly seen in European reef aquaria

the one on divers den looks a lot like my blue eye...

notice the spots by the pectoral fin and not swirls like your fish posted here..

The "CF" in the book indicates that they do not knwo if it is a juvenile or not. Perhaps it wasnt identified at the time, or the author was simply unsure. It is more a safeguard than anything. For example, many hogfish nowadays are "Genus cf. species", because they are reasonably unidentified, but they want to publish/sell/etc, so they just slap the CF and go.

alright then.
The "Blue Line Bristletooth" is most likely a juvenile striatus.
Besides 64Ivy's fish, I know of at least one other "Blueline" that transitioned into a "normal" striatus.

cl2ysta1- neither fish you posted a pic of is C. striatus

fishkid6692- one C. striatus would require at least a 75 gallon aquarium IMO.

I currently have a cf striatus juv and a large adult striatus ...there is a huge differnce in both adult coloration and juvenille in both species.. the cf. striatus refers to its origin or as posted above "believed to be a sub-species or morph" i have a book that states it is actually the area in which they are found that determines the differnce....that aside coming from personal experince with both...the differnce is mind blowing the cf. as an adult i would consider one of the nicest looking tangs out there...where as the common striatus is dull and very aggressive in my reef!!!! but let the critics do there thing but live aquaria has cf. striatus for sale and for 40 dollars i would jump all over it....
