Cupramine in QT

It says on the bottle to dose 1ml per 10.5 gals and wait 48 hrs then repeat. This should give a final concentration of .5 mg/L.

My question is if you have a test kit can you just go ahead and dose to the .5 mg/L or is the waiting 48 hrs to slowly bring the concentration up?

I would wait. I am doing the same thing myself. I have seen my ich disappear with a level of 0.25. 0.5 is a very aggressive dose and is probably not necessary in my opinion.

I also asked on the seachem forum and they said it was to give the fish time to adjust to the copper.

e55 do you just treat with 0.25 then?

I am just treating in QT for prevention. Don't want to take a chance on introducing anything to DT.

Fish was twitching and rubbing a little bit on pvc pipe but no other visible signs of anything.

You'll need to keep the concentration at 0.5mg/l. If you're using Cupramine, then you're using the least-harsh copper treatment on the market. Most fish tolerate cupramine very well. Even with dwarf angels, I have had no issues.

Also, I've found 2 weeks of treatment to not be enough. It took almost 4wks for spots to disappear a few times and then I waited another 2wks to make sure all of the parasites in the water column were dead.

:thumbsup: Make sure you are still testing the copper level. Cupramine is the safest copper out there, however I have had issues maintaining therapeutic levels for the entire recommended two week treatment. When dosed as prescribed by Seachem, I was only able to get a reading between .2-.3mg/l after the first week in a 40 gallon Breeder QT with a foam filter. I had to redose to get it to .4-.5mg/l. After that I kept the fish in copper for almost a month and it was clear. I agree that 2 weeks is not enough with certain strains of ich and velvet.

So do you guys think 3 weeks of cupramine would be enough for prevention in QT?

He has already been in QT for over 4 weeks now. I have already dosed prazipro twice and just started the cupramine 2 days ago. That would make it about 7 weeks total in QT with 2 weeks prazipro and 3 weeks copper treatment.

Personally i wouldnt medicate a fish if it doenst show any signs of illness. Just place fish in qt tank and monitor them. If after 4-6 weeks they dont show any signs of disease you are good to go.

yes but if you have fish in tank for 4 or 5 weeks and theres no out b reak i think it be safe t o say it has no ich

That is not necessarily true. Some fish can develop immunity and appear to not be infected at all but they are.

Given the variation of cycle time for ich and velvet you could be OK at 3 weeks, but I tend to stay on the safer side and do 4 weeks minimum.

Ok, I have waited this long so 4 weeks it will be. That will make it a total of 8 weeks in QT. Next time I will have a better plan and should be able to make it about 6 weeks total.
